The intro of Grants really set you up for a gospel masterpiece just for it to fall flat the second that verse kicks in.... the lyrics saved it. So I'm not gagging.

My personal take would be that NFR may be arguably better sonically to many but the songwriting in Ocean Blvd is just more superb. This album is like peak Lana songwriting for the whole f***ing album, song after song after song. And she is so mature and so sure and confident on every single word. Her pen game is untouchable here it's crazy   we really have our generation's Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks. 

Think NFR was more to a worldbuilding kind of songwriting, the whole Americana nostalgia and Long Beach longings. Ocean Blvd is more diaristic, touching on many personal stuff of her life. Both in their own lanes methinks!

 

But if we really have to compare, Ocean Blvd has some of the most beautiful and cutthroat lyrics she's ever written so that.

Fingertips is a very personal song to her, so I don't like HATE hate it, the seconds to breathe part is one of the most personal and heartfelt writing she's ever put out. 

 

But with that said, it's just a snoozefest in general.

Now I love every song on DYK, but praising Candy Necklace and Fishtail, while trashing or calling songs like FT and Grandfather “meh” is so unserious! Please, climb the stairway to Heaven and ask him to show you the light.
