Now that after like a month already and things have kinda settled. What do yall think between NFR and Ocean Blvd has the better songwriting?

My personal take would be that NFR may be arguably better sonically to many but the songwriting in Ocean Blvd is just more superb. This album is like peak Lana songwriting for the whole f***ing album, song after song after song. And she is so mature and so sure and confident on every single word. Her pen game is untouchable here it's crazy :jonny6:  we really have our generation's Joni Mitchell or Stevie Nicks.

OB has better song writing, NFR has better production imo

not hearing a melody in kintsugi just means you’re both very deaf and very stupid :cm:

Teaaa. Or maybe should have given them an actual melody

This, they are lyrically great, melody wise they are giving nothing…sound like poems on a piano track…

For me Ocean Blvd is superior to NFR! in every aspect but my opinion is 100% biased because during NFR! release I was going through a horrible situation and I never got to fully connect with this album, and listening to it reminds me of those times. I literally can't listen to The Greates without crying so there's that. But yeah Ocean Blvd for me is better both lirically and sonically, but I still love NFR! a lot and can recognize it as the album that it is.

Those, like you who get it, get it!

Kintsugi and Fingertips (and Grandfather..) are Lana at her absolute best and I won't hear otherwise from tasteless f words

Fingertips has me wishing she turned Sportcruiser into a stream of consciousness song as well

Right? Like i'd rather just listen to her poetry album and put like Beethoven as background. It would have the same effect :fan:

NFR's writing, melodies & production toes the line between accessibility and artistry phenomenally. So in that sense, that can be a criterion for being "better".

But Ocean Blvd's writing is just a lot deeper and more personal. It requires a specific state of mind and reliability to appreciate that not everyone has the bandwidth for, which is fine. But when songs like Kintsugi and Fingertips hit, they hit hard for a reason. The production is also an acquired taste. It's very subtle (outside the last 3 tracks + A&W). It's simple but timeless, it maintains cinematic orchestral elements throughout, the JS-Candy Necklace-JB run adds a dim/gloomy layer, the next leg sticks to the piano/strings because the lyrics need to be at the forefront of those songs. And Fishtail's trap beat adds such a nice element as well; it's not overbearing.

The production shines on vinyl.

Overall, I can see how people think NFR is better, because it is easier on the ears, but Ocean Blvd just impresses me even more from an artistic standpoint.

Fingertips is hitting me hard today.

I give myself two seconds to cry,

Let it crash over me

Like the waves in the sea

NFR! is the superior album between the two, but if there’s anything Ocean Blvd excels compared to NFR is definitely her lyricism. It’s THE best in her career without a doubt.

I love NFR and it's probably still my #1, but OB is really coming for her scalp.

Ocean Blvd is a back-to-back-to-back-to-back punch. Every time a song comes on I think to myself "****, this song is SO good." Once the album sinks in, it's clearly just an album packed with discography highlights.

I prefer NFR currently. It’s far more cohesive and consistent. The songwriting is good throughout and I love how the album has a cohesive commentary/theme/message. It’s a whole moment.

But Ocean Blvd definitely gives it a run for it’s money in some ways. The songwriting is some of the best of her career and there are far stronger lyrical moments here than on any of her albums, including NFR.

I just prefer the projection on NFR more.

But this album has Paris, Grandfather, The Grants, Kintsugi, A&W, and Ocean, and NFR doesn’t. So there’s that!

Sweet, my least favorite (non-interlude) song on the album, has officially hit me :deadbanana2:

In the woods somewhere, in the night
In the heart of a valley
In the sweet north country
If I'm not there, come to my house on Genesee
