Thank you! Lana references her older work all the time so the more you listen to her the easier it gets to analyse her music. But as far as I know she rarely really discusses the meanings of her songs (I know for this album she talked about Kintsugi, but I don't know if she commented on other songs), so it's all open to interpretation and maybe she had a completely different reasoning for it than what I think.

it's my favorite album of all time, so it is just truly special to me. tunnel is amazing but nothing will ever beat nfr! for me...

I just love how this is such an effortless listen. It just flows so beautifully; I even learned to appreciate the last three tracks for the breath of fresh air they bring. 

 

The soundscape is EVERYTHING. The sound of the piano is out of this world.

I think it's cause of the fact that NFR is now widely regarded as her best album and everyone constantly talks about not finding her new releases as good as NFR. But, when NFR was released a lot of people were criticising her and saying it wasn't as good as her older releases. VB's main theme is nostalgia so I think she decided to use the shorter version of it on this album to show people that the reason why they are so attached to her older releases is nostalgia. You can't compare an album that you have been listening for years and years and that you probably have memories associated with to an album that literally just released, but that's what the critics and her fans keep doing. She's saying she doesn't care about criticism:

and she'll just keep doing whatever she wants. She might also be saying she's not dead yet ("Never die, not tonight") so she'll keep making music cause that's what she loves and it doesn't matter if people won't like it as much as her older releases. 

 

I think this makes sense when combined with Fishtails and Peppers, as they are the last three tracks on the record. Fishtails is about people wanting her to make more depressing music cause that's what we all came to expect from her with BTD - Paradise - UV - HM, but hoping her music is gonna be depressing is also kind of hoping that she'll be sadder, because she's obviously not gonna write depressing songs while she's feeling happy and everything is going right. Peppers is probably her showing that she can make a different type of music, it's a catchy bop with simple and memorable lyrics which isn't something common from Lana so she's addressing the criticism that a lot people have of her work when they claim that she's been making the exact same music since the beginning of her career. And then Taco Truck x VB comes as the last of that three song run to tell us that she won't change herself just because some people don't like her work and that people also need to realise that nostalgia plays a huge role when we are discussing art.

 

This is an interesting deep dive, but wasn’t VB widely if not universally acclaimed since release (by fans and critics alike)? Also she stated in an interview Fishtail is literally about how a guy told one of her friends he would come over to braid her hair, but then he never did  so I think it’s more about relationships (I’m imagining her singing this to Barrie since she’s always writing songs about him, or whoever MAC was about, or Jack Donoghue). I believe she just included VB bc she’s flexing bc she knows how good it is, and she’s saying “I just gave you a full 16 track album (17 if you count Jimmy separately) and now I’m just messing around and having fun and giving you a remix for the 18th
