I am a biT pissed off how little love Kintsugi gets. Her delivery, the lyrics is just another league. Y'all burn in hell forever if it ain't up there as the best songs of the album for you.

i've seen a couple of reaction videos and they all break down when Kintsugi comes on, it's incredible

Well get more pissed, bc unpopular opinion coming.....I wish Kinstsugi wasn't on the album at all tbh Nothing to do with the quality, but I feel like Fingertips would hit so much harder without it. The full lead up to her just letting it all out, rather than the slow burn into it would be much more climactic (ironically, for a song so slow).

Her best album. That's it girls.

Wow. At first I hated this album. Now I absolutely love it too much to handle (except fingertips)

It's my favorite song too, sis. One of the best songs she's ever recorded.

What the hell is the meaning of her grandfather standing on her dad's shoulder though? This line just makes me not love this song. Can someone explain the meaning to me?

It’s a discography highlight

Fingertips is terrible for sure. Nothing about it is good. She clearly had better songs to replace it, right?

It's the exact opposite for me. That fact that the meaning of the song title/lyric line is so mysterious makes me love the song soooo much.

But I guess what Lana is essentially saying is that she's asking her grandfather to watch over her father from above (presumably her gf is dead). Idk about the deep sea-fishing part but maybe Lana's father literally loves fishing :deadbanana2:

I'm happy you saw the light and found appreciation for this album but SIS why you say that?

Fingertips is literally one of her best songs with a DARK lyrical theme, up there with Heroine I fear! :jonny3:

Well, this is what I imagine with that title and it's just making me cringe all the time.

But I love the song, though.

Yeah, everything after NFR has been a misery to me. I never like it at first, but then I see the light eventually. Took me months to appreciate COTCC and BB

Well it's not like you're inaccurate, the line could also mean his GF is literally standing on her father's shoulder :deadbanana:

But Lana is a poet too and that specific line may be very personal to her that only she can explain what it really means I fear...

I for sure love Kintsugi the most. But everything else is also just so good that it's hard to even decide which song to listen to

Trueee, COCC and BB only hit me JUST YESTERDAY when I decided to binge listen Lana's discog. Now those albums don't sound as boring as I first heard them, especially BB, which has actually so many gems that I missed out on :jonnycat:

Why the hell would I leave this thread when I'm saying how much I love the album?

I mean, I interpret it as her asking her grandfather (who has passed, which is significant because one of the main themes on the album is mourning family members who have died) who is in “heaven” to watch over her father when he does risky things like deep-sea fish for sharks. In the second chorus she switches it to “when he’s deep-sea fishing for all the things he’s wishing”, bringing to light the metaphor in the title.

She’s not being entirely literal. When he’s “deep-sea fishing” he’s searching for answers buried deep within his family’s lineage (something Lana’s been doing a lot of recently, as evidenced on this album), he’s rummaging through generations of trauma to “catch” or find or obtain something enlightening. He’s trying to “reel” these answers to the surface and that can be dangerous and triggering. The song lyrically focuses around calling to higher powers to keep her family safe, which is a sweet sentiment considering how on other songs like Kintsugi and Fingertips she laments quite sadly about all the loved ones she’s lost and what it’ll mean when more leave her side in the future. She wants her family, deceased and still living, to be protected and preserved and she wants the image they’re painted in light of to be pure and true, not inaccurate and tilted like the way the media and critics have viewed her.

The verses touch more so on the misconstruing of her character/intentions that the media and critics are guilty of. She seems to be reassuring not just the powers that be, but herself that she is well-intended, good in spirit, and authentic and those good qualities permeate back through her lineage. She comes from a long line of good souls. She’s been talking a lot about her karmic lineage the past few years and seems to be finding peace in her divisiveness through this understanding so I interpret the song this way for that reason.

grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father = grandfather please protect my father from heaven

while he's deep-sea fishing = while he's in danger

grandfather please protect my father from heaven while he's in danger
