As long as this scores better than BB COCC I’ll be fine (and I say this as someone who loves both those albums, for further evidence read jumpscare in spoiler…)

Spoiler

Okay I’ve only listened to 7/16 tracks on the album and I like them don’t get me wrong but is it weird for me to say I think I prefer BB? :toofunny3:

BB is just her most “Lana Del Rey” album. It literally feels like a Greatest Hits, even though none of the songs were released before. It’s the perfect mix of the “old” and the “new” Lanas :monkey:

margaret should not work as well as it does but it's lowkey one of my favourites :rip:

This is my situation with “Let The Light  In”. Kind of a meh song but I’m obsessed

I know it’s unreasonable to expect this to reach NFR reception-wise, but it’s still gonna annoy me if it doesn’t because to me, this album is undeniably the peak of Lana’s genius and artistry

i got the same vibe about it being a "greatest hits" or "unreleased compilation" too... maybe that's because she recycled so many materials from past eras and put them on there

I feel like that applies to LFL, it includes almost the sound of every era she's done

Now she knows damn well these interludes weren’t needed

I wish we had lyrics so I could follow what she’s saying fully but Fingertips is CRAZY

There’s still time for the surprise to be “Lust for Life (Lana’s Not Recorded Through a Paper Version)” :duca:

This album reminds me most of Ultraviolence, strangely. Or Ultraviolence with a dash of Honeymoon in terms of instrumentation.

Dark, murky lyrics and everything sounds live/recorded in one take. Gonna be a while for it all to click with me (although I have the last three songs to go).

i like blue banisters even if i definitely have problems with it and think it's a lesser album in her discography

on the one hand you have discography highlights like the title track (possibly in her top ten ever), dealer, sweet carolina, and wildflower wildfire (despite mike dean's best efforts), but then you have three youtube rips of songs from nearly a decade before the album was released (not even particularly excellent picks) and some of her most uninspired songwriting ever (beautiful, violets for roses). compare "don't tell me to be glad when i'm sad i really hate that" and "there's something in the air i hope it doesn't change that it's for real the beginning of something big happening" to the perfectly executed extended metaphor of tunnel's title track or fingertips and you really get a sense for why lana didn't want to promote blue banisters at all.

for it to be marketed as her "angry album" and a response to her critics was really confusing decision. i don't get that vibe from the album whatsoever. it's such a mishmash of emotions, vibes, and intentions that it fails at creating a clear narrative that so many of her other albums accomplish so effortlessly (cocc as an ode to normality, family, and friends; nfr as a vignette of a dying american dream; honeymoon as the golden hour of a late summer day). what, exactly, was she responding to? the unfair treatment she felt she experienced from the media? she already did that with qftc (and honeymoon but that's another conversation) and was coming off the back of two acclaimed albums and one of the most significant critical re-evaluations of the 2010s. how is it angry? there are hints of family trauma and lost love but they're far from the defining the moods of the album (not that there is one considering how all over the place it is).

i think blue banisters has a lot of great ideas but it also unfortunately falls into a lot of trappings which stop it from being the great album it could've been. lana was evidently feeling some type of way about... something (?) and wanted to respond in a way that felt right for her. i'm grateful for it as an album, for the title track alone, but it has several shortcomings and was very tumultuous from what we know about it (the release date change, the constant tracklist changes with i can fly, yes to heaven, loved you then and now, the youtube rips, the original three singles being released un/badly mastered, the vinyl delay), and it shows.

with some more time to cook it could've stood toe to toe with the best of what lana is capable of but as it was released it, to me, represents a lot of wasted potential

Taco x VB is good but kinda underwhelming for a closer? Idk, what do we think? :celestial5:
