Is it a good song? Yes. But that's it.

This is no Shallow.

And J.Lo (or almost anyone) would have been dragged to hell if her 7 years comeback had so much backing vocals from another artist not credited. (It's even more than Lana on SOTB)

Who's the artist?

Not people saying “it’s just a soundtrack song” when some of the best songs ever started out as soundtrack songs. :bibliahh:

I agree, it’s up there with the worst excuses :skull:

yeah this is a dud

Yeah, I'll just pretend this never happened lol cute vocals tho!

I like it. But I understand why yall don't like it

The overreactions in here...

I don't love the song but it isn't horrible. She sounds amazing & I think it works really well as a tribute to Chadwick/the movie.

This is kinda lame well when do we think r9 lead?

It's kind of like Never Ending Part Two.

Spoiler

And I think Never Ending is her worst song so :deadbanana4:

I kind of expected this song to be this though. It's a debut soundtrack song for a film centered around a tragic passing and is like super sad, what did people expect? A bop?

Her voice is exquisite, the song and the production very good.

I like it.

Atrl want that Rihanna sing S&M in the Chadwick tribute

And given that there was an announcement prior to release, saying it would be a tribute to Chadwick after dying from cancer… I’m just not sure how anyone could have heard those details and still expected a ***** bop last night?

Meanwhile, I think it would’ve been inappropriate if she had done that within this context. It’s fine if someone doesn’t like the song , but there was also no reason to expect something similar to before, when she stated a million times in the last few years, that she too has changed.

I got chills, just beautiful :clap3:

Not digging it so far. She can create incredible ballads (Diamonds, Russian Roulette) but this one is just meh to me so far…

I totally understand this. Russian Roulette is on a whole different level (vocally) compared to this hymn lol. And I would’ve liked this song more myself if it had some extra (vocal) power behind it.

Im sure it will fit beautifully in the movie and the scene might even turn it into a holiday hit, but its a nah for me. She has better ballads with better storytelling. VERY excited for the record, though, because her vocals sound warm and husky. She has grew into her tone and woke up to how unique it is

The "not everything has to be a bop!!!" and "white gays dont understand" takes here are sending me though fffff :deadbanana4:

This. It’s hilarious and very telling. :deadbanana2:

And them saying “they wanted a bop as a tribute song!1!1’

Uhh no, some of the best & biggest songs in history have been ballads. Just admit that she failed to deliver and released an absolute dud. Better luck next time.

we need to talk about how simple yet effective the arrangement and production is? it's a beautiful and refreshing take of a movie soundtrack and not your typical power ballad :clap3:

Movie soundtracks have the potential to be such an iconic moment.

If we’re being real. Will anyone listen to this one year from now, i doubt she will even include it in the tour setlist

This isn't a bad song, it's quite nice but I think most people just expected something with more oomph for Rihanna's big comeback song so the reaction is a bit muted. If it becomes a big hit we'll see a lot of switching though

Half of your fav's discography is rihjects from that gorgeous lady, yes.

the fact that i defended ur fav and u still attack me :skull: dmb btc

I don’t think it really works as a Chadwick Boseman ‘tribute’ record the way they rolled it out to be. Was looking for something more hopeful and triumphant. This is just boring and just wanders aimlessly.

Beautiful vocals but just like I thought low replay value. Production wise this is boring as hell, I don’t know why they thought a “simplistic” approach would cut it. If they wanted to do a ballad still gotta give us some oompth

I don’t really blame Rih. She did this out of respect for Chadwick. My question is how did they secure Rich’s first outing in 6 years and this is the lead to a huge blockbuster and they gave her this dud to record? She should have told them no

NOBODY was expecting a bop from a tribute, I don't know where this argument is coming from but it's just not true :rip:

What was expected was a ballad on the level of Diamonds, LOTB or Russian Roulette, something grand like most tribute songs are. That's the problem with this song: it doesn't go anywhere.

The fact that the best defense y'all can muster is "you white gays only want bops!1!1!1" and "it's different1!111!" tells you everything you need to know about this song. :rip:

Still, it's just a soundtrack single and, at this point, a good one of those is a rarity, not the norm. Hold My Hand, Spirit or whatever song Taylor released for Cats were mid too and their careers were hardly affected.

Plus, we still have another song to look forward to and I have hope The-Dream will pull through.

I adore Rihanna’s ballads (yes even the over-hated for absolutely no reason Never Ending) but this is not it. Nothing special, nothing memorable, not even a shred of a melody. The fact that this is her first release in 7 years is really disappointing :katie:

Still absolutely perched for R9 & her anticipated reign in 2023 tho
