Jeremiah Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 (edited) I think it's fun when the girlies make pop culture winks so I'm doing this thread for us to post all type of references, whether on the music, the visuals, photoshoots, etc. Some by Britney: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on the music video of "Hold It Against Me" (2011) Accused by some of copying Rihanna's "Rude Boy" at first, the music video of the #1 hit actually took inspiration from the 1975 cult classic film. The nod in question on the symbolism-heavy MV are the shots of Britney's red hot lips on black background. "Lolita" on Q Magazine photoshoot (2006) A pregnant Britney graces the cover of Q Magazine. Shot by James Dimmock, some of the takes resemble the poster to the 1962 film adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's novel "Lolita" (1955), directed by Stanley Kubrick. "Take A Bow" on the music video of "Radar" (2009) Director Dave Meyers revealed to MTV that the music video to Circus' final single was inspired on Madonna's 1994 "Take A Bow" music video. Quote "That was the premise behind 'Radar.' [We were] looking for a way to take her into a contemporary, classy environment," Meyers explained. "I felt empowered by referencing Madonna's video. Britney hasn't done anything like that." Meyers had a very clear idea of how he wanted the story line to work. "There is a narrative going on, a romantic triangle on a weekend at this polo mansion," he said. "A soap-opera romance." "Eyes Wide Shut" on the music video of "Slumber Party" (2016) Not strictly a reference, but on an interview with Extra TV, Britney compared her then upcoming music video to Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film: Quote “It's kind of a younger 'Eyes Wide Shut' theme,” she teased. "So it's kind of a little risqué. It's sexy. It's very moody.” "La Traviata" on VMAs promo shoot (1999) On a thematic photoshoot honoring operas for 1999 Video Music Awards (including other artists such as Madonna, David Bowie and Eminem), Britney portrayed Violetta Valéry from Verdi's opera "La Traviata" (1853). "Fatal Attraction," "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Freaky Friday" on "Scary" (2011) I was hesitant on including lyrics/music on this thread since name-dropping and sampling is way too common, but anyways. "Scary" is a Japanese exclusive bonus track from Britney's seventh album Femme Fatale, which smartly incorporates film and literature references for it's, duh, "scary" theme. "Fatal Attraction" (1987 film): referenced to describe a dangerous obsession. "Freaky Friday" (1972 novel with many Disney adaptations, 2003's starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis being the most known): referenced to describe body possession. "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde" (1886 novel): referenced to describe extreme changes on behaviour. Edited October 15, 2022 by Jeremiah
