Communion Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 Quote Acknowledging the importance of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action as a milestone in the common fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, as it addresses the deep historical roots of contemporary racism, acknowledges that slavery and the slave trade are – and should always have been – crimes against humanity, takes into account the legacy of some of the most appalling chapters of human history, and constitutes a holistic call to action that encompasses measures to deliver remedies to victims of racism, to strengthen education and awareness-raising, to fight poverty and marginalization and to secure inclusive sustainable development, Reiterating that the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans and colonialism were grave violations of international law that require States to make reparations proportionate to the harms committed and to ensure that structures in the society that are perpetuating the injustices of the past are transformed, including law enforcement and the administration of justice,
ClashAndBurn Posted October 8, 2022 Posted October 8, 2022 All those countries with histories deeply rooted in the slave trade. How predictable
Great808 Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 If anyone deserves reparations it’s the Native peoples of the countries that this conversation is happening in. The people who are actually still suffering real life repercussions, at least as far as the the first world countries.

Protocol Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 USA should pay for reparations for descendants of American slavery. UK should pay for reparations of descendants of British slavery in Caribbean colonies. And Arab countries (ex Ottoman Empire) should pay reparations to descendants of slaves captured from the southern coasts of Europe and Eastern Europe. African countries should also pay descendants of slaves within their own nations who were captured/bought/sold by their own people.

Luckitty Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 all the white countries voting against it so shameless

Revolution Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 The UAE is doing slavery in the present times.
Oceania Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I don't get it. Slavery existed virtually everywhere. By that logic, every country should pay reparations. Slavery still exists today, unironically in many of those countries voting "YES". Contrary to popular belief, most european countries never had a role in the transatlantic trade or in colonialism. Reparations wouldn't solve prejudice.
Domination Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Qatar voting yes…? Don’t they have slaves like right now?
ameerah Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Just now, Protocol said: What's so funny? The Ottoman Empire had a slave trade as well. Read a book. The Ottoman Empire was Turkish not Arab, and to suggest that war-stricken and poor countries should pay first world nations for something so insignificant that white people weaponize to prove they were “oppressed too!!1!” is just laughable
BowWow Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 The countries that voted NO are the first to preach about human rights to foreign third world nations but when it comes to action you see their words for what it really is
BowWow Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 and lol at China being the only large economy to vote yes, insert the person you hate made a good point.jpeg

Happylittlepunk Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 It’s never going to happen because it’s coming out of the average person tax income.
Jagger Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I think it's more noteworthy that countries that still have slaves voted yes. Especially the nation OP has a fetish for
A.R.L Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 Don't UAE and Qatar have many slave laborers whose passports are taken away from them upon arrival, earning less than USD$500 per month in one of the MOST EXPENSIVE countries, and working more than 8 hours a day straight into the sun in the harshest climate envirnoment in the world, then at the end of the day, they put at least 10 of them to sleep together inside the same room without windows? The audacity that that has. Not Mauritania voting yes when it was the LAST country to abolish slavery and the slave market ONLY in 1981 after it was forced to do so.
CaptainMusic Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I just can’t see how reparations would work, like where’s the cut off line? How black do you have to be to get it, would white people like Halsey with black heritage still get reparations despite being pretty much just as privileged as fully white people. Seems like it would be a mess.
heckinglovato Posted October 9, 2022 Posted October 9, 2022 I kinda giggled when I saw the UAE voting in favor
