So is the tracklist teased at her party last year still the current tracklist? I hope she has re-recorded at least a few more bops from the vault :gaycat6:

What was the tracklist?

I think the tracklist won't be much different than that, but apparently she re-recorded some other songs like Love Spell that will be added.

No shade to Miss Bonnie but I don't understand how she was unable to buy her masters back. I can't fathom that it would have been that expensive and she is set for life with her royalties, so I'm confused as to why she couldn't afford it. (Please educate me if she's already answered this; I don't actively follow her. I just think the BTS of the recording industry is very fascinating.)

I think it's more of a principle thing, she's been burned by labels time and time again so she's just saying **** you I'll do it this way instead

I’m not an expert on Bonnie’s current situation, but she will have signed a record deal which probably included certain songs she’d already recorded (American Girl etc and any of the album she had written before she signed) and then any songs she wrote during the term she was signed to Sony.

That means that in return for an advance, she gives ownership of those songs to the record label, and in turn the label commit to spending x amount on marketing and releasing the songs (depending on how good the deal was - back in the early 2010s the record deals were a lot more harsh and may not have stipulated that the label were obligated to release the music i.e they could sit on it).

Even though it probably doesn’t feel like it, the label probably spent hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions on marketing the few songs she released - this includes music videos, artwork, styling, creative direction. It will also include all the producer and studio fees (and she worked with the top dogs like Luke and Max who will have been very expensive even though she was signed to Luke). They will have also paid a hefty amount to send her on the US radio tour she did and the small concert tour which can be VERY expensive, especially as she had a band etc.

Therefore, Sony wouldn’t have wanted her to just walk away with all the songs that technically belong to them and they’ve spent money on, take them to another label (say a Warner or Universal frontline label) and have big hits with them. The label and everyone that runs it would look very stupid and probably get fired.

So they let her go as an artist because it wasn’t working, but she wasn’t allowed to take the songs with her. Even if she offered to pay the maximum amount to get them back, it probably wasn’t worth it for the label. Corrupt, I know!

Now it’s 10 years later and the pop zeitgeist has moved on, there’s very little chance of those songs becoming hits because they’re now quite dated. So the label probably decided it was fine to let her have them back. And so here we are!

I just hope she doesn't add (Bonnie's Version) to the title.

The re-recorded version already leaked AFAIK.

There's no official album info yet, just the single.

Any confirmed tracks have just been so VIA Tiktok comments, so I'd be hesitant to actually call them confirmed.

Thank you for the very informative write-up! An interesting point you brought up that they won't even consider an offer. I would think that money talks. I see headlines of all these prolific artists who are selling their back catalogs and masters for tens of millions, so I thought there would be a price tag for her.

Yeah! A lot of artists are selling their publishing catalogue though, which is a different revenue stream

Forever 21 has that (now) nostalgic 2010's pop sound :WAP: Can't believe we might finally get it.

Could've been part of Teenage Dream (album) and definitely would've been a hit.

Great write up. But the only thing is I don't think Sony did in fact let her have her songs back in the end. If she ended up re-recording them I assume that's bc she couldn't get her masters back. :katie:  Didn't she spend months emailing back and forth with Sony? All of that and she still couldn't get the songs? These details are a little confusing.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to hearing a new twist on these songs with new vocals. Bonnie's a great vocal producer so I bet she added little things like adlibs or softening up certain vocal deliveries (as the originals sometimes had abrasive loud screechy moments... F21 final chorus adlibs I'm lookin at you)

Yes! I totally agree, along with Rewind Your Heart. The guitar intro / verse is just like Teenage Dream (song). A yearning love song

Actually can’t believe this might finally be coming after all this time :duca: hope it’s actually coming for this date this time :emofish:

I listened to the l***ed version and they’re great songs, but I’m ngl I’m disappointed. Listening to the live Karmin Tour versions of songs like Hot City and Forever 21, I thought the production would be more pop-rock. Also Right Now probably won’t even be on the tracklist :monkey:
