Universal Studios was smart for making Nintendo land in Cali and opening another Nintendo themed area in Florida park. 🙃 Can't wait to see this

I'm scared for the land, the Hollywood one was already dangerously in-demand & crowded prior to the movie breaking worldwide records. :deadbanana2: Even 2 years later, the Osaka one is an ordeal & a half.

This movie was enjoyable enough. However, I don't see myself showing up for another movie.

If only they could just let it be a cute fun movie and move on, but its a smash, so we're gonna get 5 more of these things :skull:

The movie was great. The only issues were the dialogue and some of the pacing but other than that, it was excellent.

And why wouldn’t we want another film? There are still so many untapped characters and Nintendo has so many franchises that could make excellent films (Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Fire Emblem, etc.) and then they could culminate in a Smash Bros. film.

Deadline increased their prediction again:

Quote

SATURDAY PM:

“It’s still growing tonight” says one rival studio source who happens to be watching the non-stop booming late night ticket sales for Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie which clocked a $56M Saturday (+2% over Friday), for what is now a $146M 3-day, a massive $33,1K theater average, and a record 5-day of –wow – $204.2M per recent industry figures.

If overseas is still at $173M by tomorrow AM, then the new global opening record for an animated movie set by Super Mario Bros stands at $377.2M.

This was cute, short-while fun. I thought a lot of the traditionally simplistic character and world design from the games didn't translate well and just felt underwhelming on the big screen, though. The real world was actually done best because they had more freedom there, I suppose.

Wreck-It-Ralph and even the Sonic movies are way superior so it's a bit frustrating this will be outdoing both many times over and receive 28 sequels but it is what it is.

OMG. How many times has the prediction increase? :deadbanana4: I'm pretty sure it started with 125M or something and now it's over 200M locally. :jonny5:

We need Super Princess Peach 2, immediately. Maybe she’ll get another game when she gets her spin-off movie.

It’s crazy because it was supposed to have significantly fewer theaters but they just keep adding new ones since it’s so in demand. They were expecting a $225M global opening and now it’s almost already the highest grossing videogame film ever.

My only real issue with the movie was that they seemed to move really quickly. Each location was really just a blip.

Visually everything looked nice, and Lumalee added some great humor to the show.

i was gonna watch then i found out who voiced mario

I've been a Nintendo stan since I was 2 years old, but this was objectively bad. The main culprit was the writing :rip: They seriously used "mamma mia" as a joke 4 times like :deadbanana2: The laziness. I saw it in a sold out theater and there were soooo many jokes that got ZERO laughs :skull:

It was of course fun to catch so many game references, but that was pretty much all I enjoyed. There are plenty of really great children's movies with strong character development, inventive plot, narrative coherence, etc., so there's no excuse for this. I just hope the next one gets a much better writer.

Went to see this last night - I laughed a few times from the game references. Lumalee was pretty funny. I didn't expect some deep plot so it was just OK for me :lakitu:

The writing wasn’t great and it suffered from weird pacing but overall this was so fun.

some of the jokes didn’t land but when they did, they did — bowser at the piano, the existential luma in the cage :priceless:

This is doing fantastic but let's not forget this is a full 5-day opening, Frozen 2 had a regular 3-day debut. Kind of odd and skewed to say that it's the biggest animated debut ever.

Miss Luma was the star of the show :giraffe: they are setting up the DEMAND for Rosalina to make her entrance (though Daisy first pls)

Now that I’ve seen it, I agree it moved way too fast. We literally JUST meet Peach and the next thing we see she asks Mario to help her, no discussion :rip:

I hope the sequel gets a much better writer, yes. I hope they don’t interpret this success as his doing because it’s certainly NOT :deadbanana4: he is lucky people adore Mario so much and that Nintendo did their best to make a faithful [visual] adaptation.

Peach and Bowser were also very great by the way, but I also feel they could have done more with Toad

3 day weekends have a much bigger advantage than 5 day weekends. Had it been 3 day it likely wouldve demolished the record even harder. (and im pretty sure frozen 2 did have preview days but not 100%)

Yes Frozen had standard Thurs evening previews. Mario has a full day and a half of extra grosses padding it's debut. It's not accurate to say Mario is the new record holder unless that record is for 5-day gross. Frozen still had the biggest 3-day global debut.

I'm not downplaying it's success but let's be accurate when considering record holders.

The official reporting refers to the "biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated title". There's no arbitrary numerical constraint.

That's not how it works with the Hollywood trades. That's the record that was broken, and that's how it will always be reported in the future - until another film breaks it.

I agree with the pacing complaints. They could’ve spent more time on character development and world-building tbh. Considering Universal/Nintendo have already hinted at making more movies together, I don’t know why they chose to cram so much into the first one. They didn’t leave many options for a sequel.
