I'll be watching tomorrow.. I'm not convinced by the reviews. They sound stupid as **** :rip:

I can see the coping already starting " it's a kids movie who cares about reviews".. nobody is asking for Citizen Kane, but at least put some effort into making the film and it's story stand on its own. Puss in Boots 2 just had some of the best WoM and public reception in years and it's still a "kids" movie.

LOL i'm already seeing that against people who didn't vibe with the Barbie trailer. like, there's no middle ground with those folks

And yet these people would be over the moon if the movie was acclaimed. Critics matter, except when we disagree and then they don't.

This "art shouldn't be criticized" movement is just embarrassing.

I mean, yeah, Mario is one of the most narratively shallow games in the industry. Of course it's not going to translate that well to film which is inherently more story-driven.

This much-trailed, much-hyped new animated feature is tedious and flat in all senses, a disappointment to match the live-action version in 1993.

jokes on them i love that old $h!tty movie and will still probably like this !

I just got out of my midnight showing in NYC.

I liked it, about as I expected. tons of references, music was phenomenal (honestly surprised)

Bowser carried the film and was the most charming character which I also expected :wave2:

No spoilers but the reviews are right about the story being pretty basic with very little character development. I'd be interested to see what they do with a sequel.

overall it's cute and harmless and kids will love it

also this LGBT icon was a highlight :lmao:

I’m honestly really excited to see this :skull: who expected a riveting plot or character development? Like we all know what this was gonna be

yaaaasss I got out of the nyc screening too! amc?

i enjoyed it a lot, the voice acting (specifically seth rogan) kinda pissed me off though

the references to the games were really really well done though, it’s simple but I’d def be down for a sequel

Did people actually expect a plot :skull:

Honestly I rather take a meh movie but critically acclaimed games rather than a good reviewed (was it even?) movie and panned to meh games, like some blue Hedgehog :giraffe:

I was not expecting anything from the story and they definitely kept it minimal,  still enjoyed it but it did leave me wondering what it would be like if the characters had more of an arc or relationship building.

it's tricky when you're working with characters that usually don't have any development in the games. I liked the dynamic between Mario and DK though.

Mario / Peach I kind of wanted more of an arc from

Why wouldn't they? WTF. This is a movie and movies have plots. :rip: Not everything can be just ViBeS.

Metacritics for movies are irrelevant. Show the RT score with a much larger pool of varied critics.

they did some origin story / family things with Mario that I didn't expect but I wish they had taken it further

I lowkey feel like the storytelling is ironically held back by Nintendo being involved. they probably don't want too much character development / back story / relationship conflicts amongst the characters that aren't present in the games to mess with how people perceive the characters outside of this movie

Miyamoto was the one to choose Illumination, so no surprise he made another bad decision :fan:

not rotten:rip: oh well i guess i'll wait for the next blockbuster

Just left the midnight showing!

It was pretty bad imo. Very very thin plot and the jokes rarely worked for me. It's by-the-numbers illumination.
I recommend seeing it on a premium screen if you can. The visuals are really the only consistent strength.

Nn my friend who's a huge Nintendo stan just watched it and said he's in disbelief in how horrible it was. Says half the time, licensed songs are used instead of music from the games, story is non-existent, characters suck, it was 90 minutes of references while random 80s songs are playing in the background.

Still going to see this in spite of the reviews, but definitely a little sad by its reception.

I don’t understand the perspective ‘what did you expect?’ regarding the plot. This is a narrative feature film, there should be a compelling plot driving it regardless of genre, style, etc. Compelling does not mean complex nor does it mean unique. You can tell a simple story effectively, the medium has tons of conventions for a reason, use them well and you can get a lot with a little. Also, other studios have managed to build convincing narratives around existing intellectual property, I don’t think it’s out of line to want the same from Nintendo and Illumination :michael:

I’m not anticipating an intricate or even nuanced story, just an entertaining or thoughtful one, otherwise why bother? (I mean, I know why, Mario is a very popular IP that will make money regardless of artistic expression and whatnot) Anyway, I know I’m gonna have fun watching this, but I did want to make a quick note concerning the plot discourse.

ARLO was right, Miyamoto messed up again

i was just coming here to post this :dies: SPILL tho, anonymous user.

The way Miyamoto was lauding Illumination should've been a red flag.
