SinnerCity Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 How would you rank this film? Similar, above or below The Witch, quality wise? I liked The Witch but it felt a little overhyped for me so I'm trying to keep my expectations low this time around.
MAXIMO Posted Wednesday at 03:16 AM Posted Wednesday at 03:16 AM Such a visual fest, this should be winning definitely Best Cinematography. 1

I had high expectations and they lived up to it. I loved how scary it was. No complaints tbh. I also thought the pacing was good. Like yes, you feel the 2+ hour run time but it's so filled with story and moving parts, I was all in. This is my expectation and hopefully I feel the same after watching it.

Jglj Posted Wednesday at 07:12 PM Posted Wednesday at 07:12 PM I watched the movie, it was very good. Great performances, the cinematography was stunning, I loved how the scenes in the moonlight looked a bit like a black and white silent film. I also found the costuming to be very well done. Spoiler The story is not new, we all know that, since it's a 100+ year old movie based on an even older book. But I really liked the take Eggers had, the obvious main theme being sexual desire and violence against women. I felt it was well done and compelling, Lily-Rose knocked this out of the park, she was so good, she had a lot of interesting scenes, the one where she fights with her husband is particularly interesting. The design of the creature was so disgusting, the production deserve kudos, it did look like a walking corpse. Also like how they only really show it in the last scene when it dies in sunlight. I think this remake lives up to the legacy of the original while adding it's own twist on certain things.
BeachRat Posted Thursday at 07:39 AM Posted Thursday at 07:39 AM watching tonight, sick from new year's raving, sleep deprivation, dehydrated, had two cigarettes all day...feel right
mitochondria23 Posted Thursday at 10:19 PM Posted Thursday at 10:19 PM Saw this last night. Loved it. I agree that the soundtrack could be better everyone was good except Aaron Taylor Johnson. Some of his scenes are weak imo. 1

But he is probably the most attractive man on planet earth and you know what? That's ok if he can't act. He's the main star of my fantasies
Contessa Posted yesterday at 03:37 AM Posted yesterday at 03:37 AM Absolutely gorgeous cinematography. Some of it are very reminiscent of Tarkovsky which is clearly one of the inspirations. Story was solid. Acting was phenomenal besides Aaron which felt stiff and took me out of it at moments, esp his grief was very unbelievable. Something about the film didn't feel scary enough to me imo, there were moments of levity that didn't mesh too well with the horror.
Contessa Posted yesterday at 03:39 AM Posted yesterday at 03:39 AM I had no notes about the soundtrack tbh. It was perfect.
BadHabits Posted yesterday at 03:45 AM Posted yesterday at 03:45 AM Orlok wasn't scary and he was the weakest part of the movie. Lily's performance was great, as was Nicholas'. Cinematography was great as was the music. Beautifully-shot, was a little gory and not very scary, if that makes sense. The only scary parts of the movie was the bloodsucking scenes or the body horror. It was an atmospheric and chilling movie but not terrifying. I'd give it 4/5 or 8/10.
Attaboy Posted yesterday at 03:51 AM Posted yesterday at 03:51 AM Gorgeous looking movie and loved the moodiness. They nailed that and Lily was great. But pacing was slow for my attention span Also didn't find the villain scary. I just wanted him to get the words out it took him like 5 minutes to speak two sentences
Witnessed ET Posted yesterday at 03:56 AM Posted yesterday at 03:56 AM So Lily actually did good? The first page of this thread was swearing that she was not a good fit lol. Good for her.

BeachRat Posted yesterday at 12:18 PM Posted yesterday at 12:18 PM it wasn't scary at all but that's ok cause it was iconic. the last scene is cinematic hall of fame herstory babes!
HonourableVomit Posted yesterday at 12:24 PM Posted yesterday at 12:24 PM LRD was kind of just doing a Mia Goth impersonation
Blank Space Posted yesterday at 01:01 PM Posted yesterday at 01:01 PM bill and lily had the best performances in it by far
EdgeofTeeth Posted yesterday at 06:32 PM Posted yesterday at 06:32 PM Aesthetically, this was basically flawless and I was totally engrossed. Robert Eggers is such a talented worldbuilder – that man really knows how to create a fully realized atmosphere and commit to it. Visuals, soundtrack... it was gorgeous. I got chills multiple times and the daybreak scene at the end left me gagging I agree that Orlok could've been scarier, but that's probably my only complaint tbh. Lily is very good in this and she deserves her flowers.
ICLDXU4HS Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago This was easily his weakest movie yet for me. Still very good and a lot to like about it, but it felt a little less weird and ambitious and more like an attempt to tell a classic story straightforward for a more sizable audience than usual and to do it with class to it and without dumbing down his style, just making it more accessible which is fine. Definitely watching it again.
