Because a lot of people, especially girls, have a fantasy about having the power/being so special you can change even the most horrible person, or that this horrible person got a soft spot for them because they're special and wouldn't hurt them.

Why is everybody acting like this is a new phenomenon and a reason never to discuss/dramatise real life events? Didn’t Charles Manson literally get married in prison  (engaged… close enough). People are weird, people have BEEN weird and will continue to BE weird for all eternity.

Well American media glamourizes, glorifies and fetishizes violence and killing in order to cultivate a culture that is war hungry at all times. Like, serial killers are pseudo celebrities that can be mined for content instead of being left in the past, they are no longer human, but entities to be gocked at and silently admired as freedom personified. It is why people love home invasion scenarios due to the prospect of protection via brutal methods and a battle for survival. 

 

Without the serial killer, the moral wars between good and evil shifts from the individual monster to the corporate behemoths and the government.
