This is why people are mad Ariel was race swapped.

What kind of ‘logic’ do you need to cast a POC? Unless their race is central to the story, why should it matter what the actor’s race is when casting? Why is white the default, and you need some sort of “logic” to justify casting a POC instead?

Honestly so tired when there's discussion about white actors playing non-white characters, these people always say that these white actors are best actor to play the role. But when the roles is reverse, these same people would get mad and say it's a "woke agenda" :biblio:

I mean the director himself said Halle Bailey set the bar so high during the audition which means that her talent alone win her roles as Ariel, not because of some "progressive agenda" etc etc

These racists can't accept that POC actors can outperform white actors :priceless:

Think pieces over a damn mermaid is insane. Disney stans should be evaluated.

Being furious about this whole thing is so weird. I won't be seeing the movie because I don't have kids and I'm very tired of live action remakes trend. You can leave it at that and move on. Racism is pretty much the only reason it makes sense for someone to foam at the mouth over something so trivial. It's a fictional, mythical mermaid for a live-action adaptation of a children's movie. Who cares?

They’re mad because they’re racist. It’s as simple as that. It really doesn’t matter to the story at all if this fictional mermaid is black or white. The only impact it will have on the film is making little black girls feel special when they see someone that looks like them on screen.

True but Disney also has the money and resources to actually create diverse stories rather than replacing a particular race princess with another for "diversity" sake. Why is the only black princess a frog for the entire movie? It's disingenuous to say Disney cares about diversity and making little black girls feel seen when there's not one original princess that looks like them and has full screentime.

That said anybody who actually cares about this casting choice and especially angry over this is racist. I've never seen so many grown men online suddenly care about a mermaid in my life and it's concerning. Get a job, or a life.

It would've been more fun had they created a completely new story focused on a black mermaid set in a same or similar universe. All these remakes are getting tired.

The fact that this is even such a hot topic at all is an indication that Halle being Ariel and other race swaps that aren’t relevant to the character should be normalized. :rip:

Literally a non-issue, and even if the girl is making some points about creating new stories, that doesn’t stop backlash from happening for other predominantly POC films and media. So like… yes but no.

I remember the anger when Scarjo play the lead of ‘Ghost in the Shell’.

Disney didn't choose an actress that didn't resemble Belle though. Can you imagine if they race-swapped Aladdin, Mulan, Moana, Black Panther?

What terrible examples :deadbanana4:

Halle has an amazing voice and I'm sure she was cast on that alone

I'm not quite sure what example you think you're making here. :rip:

Dont have issue with her race, shes just not pretty face to me (looks like a fish). Miss Zendaya or Keke Palmer would be better.

I haven't watched any Disney movie since Emma Watson bad Belle movie though, maybe will tune in on this one

There are horribly racist people that are bothered by this, and have been sending horrible messages to the poor actress that really did nothing wrong.

There are also others that are just mad she doesn't look exactly like Ariel did - some people just want the remake to closely resemble the previous movie. Even if this white ginger actress was cast, they would be upset, because this is not what Ariel looks like:
Who Is Amybeth McNulty? 5 Things About The New 'Stranger Things' Star – Hollywood Life

All of the Disney remakes have had changes made, and all of them received backlash. This one seems loud because it's the usual backlash + some additional racists. In the end, this movie has gained so much buzz, I really don't see it flopping that badly.

So if they had decided to turn Ariel into a green alien, would you still be watching? Since she's no human with no race.

Its the fact that a black humna being playing a mermaid had to be compared to a GREEN SPACE ALIEN that does not even exist for me...

Yall dont even hear your racism cause its SO loud.

Did you think before you typed this BS?

I was referring to the fact that the argument people make is that Ariel is a mermaid, hence her race is irrelevant so people shouldn't care if she's black or white, even though she was popularized as being white. So, my response was that 'Do you think that, had they turned her green, people wouldn't also be upset about that?'

I am, by no means, comparing a black woman to a green alien, that just something you literally came up with :rip:

So maybe it's YOU that thinks that? Stop projecting.

I wish we could have a parallel universe where they casted a white actress with blond hair to play Arielle just ppl can see that it still would be hated. No one hates on the new Arielle bc she's black but bc she isn't looking like the cartoon.

The character is called Ariel, for starters. And yes they very much are "hating on her" because she's black. Hence why she's received an overwhelming amount of racist backlash for taking the role. :coffee2:

These characters all came from thin air. Just as they were imagined white, they can be imagined black.  I understand how this vision could make some of you, as a consumer, uncomfortable. I understand that especially because this whole project is banking on the idea that we will all be drawn to the theater because we want to experience stories/characters familiar to us. And for many of us, whiteness is familiar.

When this movie succeeds at the box office, you’ll see that audiences fall into two brackets: 1) those who are experiencing these stories for first time; 2) those who wanted to relive the same familiar stories/characters you do. The difference is that they can find comfort in the elements of the story that have nothing to do with race. And if it makes you uncomfortable to accept that absolutely every element of this story could be just a comforting, rewarding and enjoyable, regardless of the race of its characters, you should be curious about that.

Its actually the OTHER way around where everything is white-washed in hollywood. Why do you think 99% of Hollywood is WHITE? She sounds ridiculous. :deadbanana2:

I just hope Halle can ACT tbh. we know she can SING sing, but she'll get SHREDDED by reviewers if she can't act the part and people will again call it racism

just an overall messy situation.
