Tm4074 Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 A classic. 4 really had the last laugh after being an "underperformance" for Beyoncé at the time.

Love On Top wasn't even a lead single. It wasn't even the highest peaking single from "4closure", the first album in her career that yielded no top 10 hits but she still managed to turn lemons into lemonade this era is really when she started being set apart from her gen. of pop icons. The rest would've struggled, and have since struggled in similar circumstances and have yet to bounce back. She was a superstar that was starting to age (in pop years) that figured out how not to be completely reliant on the charts before streaming took over and the newer artists started descending upon the landscape. She didn't need to still be at the forefront of every chart, she just needed to not get lost in the shuffle so she forged herself a new path, which allowed her to keep up with the current scene in some ways but still allowed her space to continue to grow as an artist. It's amazing after everything that's transpired since, stans are continuing to try her hard earned status and legacy. They are asleep and don't realize that a lot of younger artists are trying to get to where she is. I believe she's the first traditional female pop superstar to skew the traditional model and show peers/successors that there are other ways to be secure in different aspects. I don't think we'll really see much of the long term impact of this for a while. Now that she's crossed that final threshold of sitting with the classic pop divas, especially in light of a #1 hit at 40 with 25 years of a career behind her, she can't be shaken. What's also admirable is that her passion for music hasn't seemed to wane in the slightest, taking on such ambitions as a 3 part album at her age. What other pop icon has done that before besides maybe Prince? Edited September 22, 2022 by Soda Pop Queen
