A picture of the album cover depicting a silver background with Björk standing facing forward in the middle. Björk is dressed in an outfit resembling a Kimono wearing large rings around her neck, silver fingernails and a large bun shaped hair style on each side of her head.

Björk's masterpiece Homogenic was released on September 20, 1997

The album reached the Top 10 in fifteen countries, including the United Kingdom, France and Australia

Three of its singles were Top 40 hits in the UK, "Bachelorette" (#21), "Alarm Call" (#33) and "All Is Full Of Love" (#24)

It was nominated for Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1998 Grammys, losing to Radiohead's OK Computer

The music video for "Bachelorette" was nominated at the Grammys and won a VMA

The music video for "All Is Full Of Love" won multiple awards for its innovative design and use of technology

The album gave Björk her first Brit Award, where she delivered her iconic "grapefruit" speech

  • My favourite album of all time by my favourite artist of all time
  • My go-to album whenever I feel down, listening to it makes me forget everything for 40 minutes
  • It has the song that saved me from death (sorta) - hearing Jóga on the ambulance radio was a life changing moment
  • Objectively the best 1-2 outro punch in the history of music - Pluto and AIFOL

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOMOGENIC :jonny6: I LOVE YOU AND YOUR CREATOR SO MUCH!! Words cannot express how much I treasure this piece of art!

OT: This stunning piece of art, one of the most essential albums of all time, so ambitious and beautiful, I don't have words to describe it.

It's crazy to me how many brilliant and iconic LPs by female artists came out in 1997-98: this, Ray of Light, Butterfly, Impossible Princess, The Velvet Rope, Come on Over, Spice, Is This Desire? etc.

When I was first getting into Ms. Guðmundsdóttir's discography a decade ago, this album was what sealed my fandom. I was in awe of the complexity of the string arrangements paired with these dense trip hop beats and the rawness of her vocal performances. The circumstances of the writing/recording of this album made for a bleak but beautiful sounding landscape. My only complaint is probably the common one, All Is Full of Love video version should've been somewhere on the album. Howie B version could've been treated as a reprise of some sorts. Still a perfect 10 though.

Something was definitely in the water in the late 90s. The girls, most of which were women with some life experience and creative freedom by that point, were eating and spilling their guts at the same time lol. I imagine there was a lot of existential dread because of the impending Y2K that was underscoring the tone of many of these albums too. It was the end of an entire century so best put your best foot forward if it was to be the end of all things.

And seeing her perform Pluto live was a spine tingling experience!!

My favourite album tied with Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. That hasn't changed in 12+ years. Still sounds so incredibly fresh and innovative.
