I will just copy my Letterboxd review in here. It doesn't really have spoilers in it, but just in case:

Spoiler

"MaXXXine" will definitely be a divisive ending to Ti West's trilogy. I think a lot of people will be thrown off by the Giallo style, which makes it feel so different from the first two movies. It also relies to heavily on the hype that was build on the characters Maxine and Pearl, without adding much new to the storyline and just repeats famous quotes. The movie feels a bit disjointed, so many familiar faces are thrown in without their characters adding anything valuable to the storyline (Kevin Bacon's character is also ******* annoying) and while there is blood, a lot of kills happen off-screen and i'm not a fan of that.

However, it does do a lot of things right. Mia Goth, once again, gives a performance to be remembered and her character isn't the typical final girl. She's iconic, but not always likeable. Maxine is heavily flawed and not afraid to be so. They nailed the 80's vibe, it's visually very pleasing, and they kinda did surprise me with the killer reveal, although it's the only thing that would make sense looking back. Not gonna lie, i'm a bit disappointed overall, but i also think that it's one of these horror movies that will only really be appreciated in time.

Ok I just got back from the cinema and I LOVED it  :jonny5:

I do get why some might hate it and I understand people who consider it to be the weakest movie of the trio, but I really enjoyed it despite the messiness :jonny5:

I'd give it like an 8/10

I WILL NOT ACCEPT A LIFE I DO NOT DESERVE! PERIOD!

I love the movie, it was great fun :clap3:

Here's my preference on the three films...

Best Horror Movie: X

Best Mia Goth performance: Pearl

Best aesthestics: MaXXXine

Soundtrack was killer and I loved that the movie didn't take itself too seriously.

I hope Ti West stops with this franchise now and uses his goodwill and money to do something new next.

I liked it lol

I think the first like 30 minutes is really strong and was exactly what I was expecting. The "reveal" and stuff after that felt kind of off but overall I thought it was decent. I think X is probably a stronger film but I enjoyed this more. Pearl remains the best of the 3!

Just came back from the cinema!

It was good but lacked the obscenity of the other two films. The first two movies, were interesting and had something to say. Pearl and Howard's relationship in X was touching, if you exclude the murdering part.

This is definitely the worst of the three, but still good. I also wanted it more gory!

Can't wait for Longless to be released!

Just got out of the theater and I have to say, it's a visually stunning movie, with a very weak plot. Can't believe this is what they envisioned for Maxine's ending. Such a weak storyline.

Just get out of the theater and I'm gonna say I wasn't expecting this kind of twist on the trilogy but i ******* loved it. I'm a sucker for camp and this was just serving camp excellence and to be fair it makes a lot of sense considering the time this is set, the 80's the blueprint decade of camp movies in horror, even there were movies that tried to convey horror in a very serious way but they were so camp that they didn't even were that good so they were just laughably af and this uses a lot of those cliches on here.

I would say I loved how unapologetically this is, and I know Ti knew that this would be a polarizing film for the die hard fans of X and Pearl but this was just a very nice, fun and original addition to end this iconic trilogy.

My only complaint was the reveal which felt a bit rushed but it was so fun the context of it all and what followed next. The people on my theater were laughing and enjoying during the entire movie and it was packed. Love it but I also get why some people wouldn't and it's fine

i loved it. it was very camp and Mia Goth shone in her role yet again. i liked that they continued with the parallels between her and Pearl, but also showed their differences and the reason why Maxine made it while Pearl ultimately failed. the soundtrack and aesthetics complimented the film brilliantly.

i want to see it again. i think Pearl will always be my favourite of the three, but Maxxxine did not disappoint at all :clap3:

Maxine is such a fun character to root for. her mantra of 'I will not accept a life I do not deserve!' CLEARS

I really enjoyed it. Pearl was too unnerving for my taste (although I still think it's a good film) and X, while also still good, just didn't satisfy me quite like this did. Mia and Elizabeth especially were standouts.

As stated earlier in the thread, I thought Ti and Co. nailed the 80s feel of the film. I genuinely felt like I was watching something from that era, especially as it continued. You can tell Ti really took inspiration from films like Blow Out.

Watched it on the weekend and I really enjoyed it!

Love that all movies have their distinctive styles and traits. This might be the weakest of the trilogy but it's still a very good movie.

It does lose a bit of steam with some clunky editing choices in the end here and there, but it's such a fun movie. Tho, I wish it would have been more giallo-ish throughout. Don't expect anything groundbreaking,

Spoiler

and after X it was kinda obvious who the "mastermind" would be here (wished there was more of a surprise to it),

but still a very stylish killer mystery story. Definitely will be watching it again.

Also loved the little nod to The Innkeepers!

@Walk_Away21 @Reverse Warholian @Maxxxine

It was good - not great, imo.

The gritty atmosphere and gore in the kill scenes were brilliantly executed, and the soundtrack was exxxquisite. There are some images I won't be forgetting for a long time :rip:

I appreciate that every entry in this franchise has a distinct identity, with this one leaning more towards giallo and crime drama. However, the final act and the big reveal were fumbled and didn't work for me, despite still being entertaining.

Maxine's character development was also lacking apart from her relentless ambition for fame, which like we already know. It felt like we were just watching her run errands for half the movie, rather than learning more about her and her ~unusual~ upbringing. More of a script issue though since Mia obviously ate down.

Aside from Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Debicki's characters, we also spend far too little time with the new characters, making their deaths feel very ineffective. Halsey and Moses Sumney's couple moments were cute tho.

7/10

Yeah I saw it again yesterday and now that the novelty has worn off, I would give it a solid 4 stars

I refuse to rank the three because they are each such unique stand alone films.

That's an aspect that I also was disappointed with. I wished for more CHARACTER! Loved the beginning with her audition, the shittalk right after towards the other actresses (she was giving us New York/Tiffany Pollard and I loved it!), and the scene she had with Kevin Bacon in the hotel restaurant gave her the opportunity for a bit more subtle acting which I loved - but after the first half, those moments were too sparse and the acting felt a bit too apathetic for my taste and, like you put it, we were just there to watch her do a bunch of stuff. I get it, her trauma resurfaced and she had to juggle a few things, but it's the same expression over and over again. Mia SMEARED the screen with character and acting in Pearl. Kinda wished she did that for Maxine's character as well.

Spoiler

Also... how awkward was the "chase" scene between Maxine and Kevin Bacon at the studio lot, and how awkward was Michelle Monaghan's death scene... That entire sequence felt a bit steamless. For a nanosecond I thought the reveal would be that they all just faked their deaths very poorly lol and it's nice to see that ladies' rooms in the 80s were rarely if ever frequented (little gripe lol)

But still: the movie was giving me life and was still a feast for the eyes. I think 7/10 sounds about right. Recommended.

I thought it was a really fun movie but I'm not the biggest fan of cheesy camp horror so it fell a bit flat for me, especially following the reveal. That was just awful.

Just saw Maxxxine and I loved it :clap3: Mia Goth gave a top tier performance. The story was interesting, and the kills were brutal. I jumped a couple times in the theater lol. A great finish to a soon to be iconic horror trilogy.
