I don't mean to be insensitive, genuinely just wondering why the date of the funeral needs to be a public holiday? I had a doctors appointment and just received a text telling me it's been rescheduled for two weeks later

To give as many people as possible an opportunity to attend in London or to watch at home to say their final goodbyes to our sovereign. It’s a once in a lifetime event. It’s not like it happens that often. The last time was 70 years ago.

There's a few Brits in this thread that can give you a much more thorough answer than this, but this is what I was able to pull from The Guardian:

Quote

The government confirmed the day would work in the same way as other bank holidays, and that there would be no statutory entitlement to time off, with employers able to include it as part of a worker’s leave entitlement.

The Department for Business said the announcement did not interfere with existing contractual arrangements between employers and workers, but that they would “expect employers to respond sensitively to requests from workers who wish to take the day of the funeral off work”.

They said schools would be expected to close. X

Also this from another source:

Quote

The announcement of the bank holiday means that on the day of the Queen's funeral, schools, most businesses, and many shops will close for the day.

It is currently thought that there are plans for the Queen's coffin to process on a gun carriage to Westminster Abbey, and the military will be expected to line the streets and also join the procession on the day of the state funeral.

There are usually eight annual bank holidays for workers in England and Wales, while those in Scotland normally get nine or ten - depending on the timing of New Year and patron saint days.

There was an additional bank holiday earlier this year, with a four-day weekend from 3-5 June 2022 to mark the Queen's Platinum JubileeX

Is it yearly now? Or only happens that once like for the Jubilee, or do I have that wrong too?

But why? What did she do to deserve that?

She was the Head of state, it makes sense.

This sounds messy. I can't see Biden wanting to travel without the typical OTT presidential 50 armored car motorcade.

Imagining him riding a BUS with Macron, Von Der Leyen, Naruhito etc. to the funeral just makes me kii

No U.S. president has ever attended any event since I don't know, the last world war, in Britain, without a security escort.

I read the original report from Politico EU and there's still a lot of gray areas not clarified.

I can't picture him travelling "on a bus" with other leaders at all. It's simply not going to happen.

Maybe it won't be his own car and he'll have to walk instead but what Metro or Politico EU describes is not happening.

Prince Andrew's trending at #4 in the UK apparently as of my posting this

The Jubilee one was for this year only. So this year we ended up with 2 extra bank holidays - for the Jubilee and the funeral. Neither of these will be repeated after 2022.

Although next year we will presumably get an extra one for King Charles' coronation but obviously that's yet to be confirmed. But again this would be a one-off.

Thanks for the clarification

Is she good? Y’all acting so weird. The royals are gross and iffy. Down with the monarchy and all that old stuff. This and the Bible are still the taint we don’t need and stop us from evolving.

Nothing against her and may she rest in peace but the thought of the country having 12 days of forced mourning for a powerless head of state is so funny to me. Also, make Charlie pay the inheritance tax lmao. If I were him I'd just abdicate knowing how much the country hates me.

I doubt it, TV isn't as big as it was back then, and I don't think they'll count online streams

Not the funeral landing in the middle of my days off meaning I get a 4 day weekend. Maybe I’m a royalist after all.
