Evagoras Pallikarides (Greek: Ευαγόρας Παλληκαρίδης; 26 February 1938 – 14 March 1957) was a Greek-Cypriot poet and revolutionary who was a member of EOKA during the 1955–1959 campaign against British rule in Cyprus. He was arrested on 18 December 1956 when he was caught with his guns loaded on a donkey. During his trial, he did not deny possession of the weapon and said, "I know you will sentence me to death, but whatever I did, I did as a Cypriot who wants his liberty."[1][2] He was sentenced to death by hanging for firearms possession on 27 February 1957.

She ordered the deaths of 9 Cypriots who fought against the British colonization in the earoy 1950s. Those 9 Cypriots were aged 19-24. They werw arrestes and she ordered their execution.

This is the woman y'all are mourning....

hmmmmm but I bet you think its okay for your much loved EOKA members to go around having killed countless Turkish Cypriots!

You can dislike her for all the awful things she did throughout her years and you can like her for being a figurehead for a nation and a commonwealth for our entire lifetime.  Both sides have points, no side should be shaming the other side for how they feel.

Good points. :clap3:

The monarch has been an apolitical figurehead for a good while now, so where have these claims of her being a murderous ruthless dictator likened to Hitler come from? It's not a reach to believe that atrocities have been committed in her name, but to believe they have been carried out on her direct orders sounds like a reach..

I have no idea in my years of life I've never heard these theories until the last few years. When I grew up (in the 80s-90s) people respected the royals tbh.

People still do (at least the UKs). A large part of that was people liked/respected Elizabeth. I do not think the world will care about Charles. He's not generally liked.

I think the tide will turn against the monarchy with Charles ruling.

I don’t remember the Philippines being invaded by Britain? But wow, almost the whole world was invaded and now they are just a tiny island.

I was quite surprised to learn that Charles’ likability to the GP has increased quite dramatically in recent years. I read earlier that a 2019 poll showed that 42% of people in the UK were happy for Charles to become king. A 2021 poll showed that this figure increased to 60%.

And so far, although it’s only a day into his reign, he’s doing everything right so far. The way he interacted with the public in London today has gone down well, and many people were moved by his tribute to his mother. I think he will win a lot of people over.

I don't really like Charles but his speech today was better than I expected tbh. I expected the royal family's image to quickly further deteriorate after Elizabeth's passing but he's been handling things well so far. He still has a lot of work to do though.

It's quite known that behind the scenes KCIII and William had a more no nonsense approach to the handling of Prince Andrew, the Queen had something of a blind spot admittedly due to him being her son. I think if he continues to show that it will endear the public to him. I also believe Camilla has been navigating something of a lowkey approach to her royal duties, keeping a calendar full yet being careful not to grab attention and headlines. I think it would go a bit far to say that people like Camilla but the hate of yesteryears has become indifference, and that has benefit Charles.

People are just being very OD and extra about it.

I think although a lot of people might not necessarily like Charles, they will give him a chance - solely for the reason that it was what Elizabeth wanted, and people had a lot of respect for her. He and Camilla are very fortunate that his mother was actively preparing and reassuring the GP about them for the past few years. I think she knew they’d have a tough ride so she tried to make it as easy for them as possible. But she’s done her part. The rest is up to them.

I don't get it. The ***** is fully dead. Why do people have to be so nasty towards towards her now? Where was all this energy during these past few years? I'm old enough to remember when Betty white and the queen was being used as one of those "protect at all costs" meme. The hatred isn't genuine. Saying you're gonna spit on someone's grave isn't normal behavior :rip:Have some tact people. Truly disgusting behavior from grown ass adults

Virtue signalling. A lot of people pretending they know more than they do. They’re afraid of forming any independent thought so just go with what the cool edgy Twitter crowd are saying

I'm so confused by the reactions on social media, especially Twitter.

There's no confusion here, maybe you live in bubble and not aware that majority people outside Western world hate her for all those shady things

glad she died peacefully she always seemed like a nice woman who truly committed to her duty

and the people saying all those nasty things should be ashamed, wtf is wrong with you? :rip:

At the time of her accession, only 45 per cent of Danes were in favour of the monarchy, most believing it had no place in a modern democracy.

During her reign, however, Queen Margrethe has managed to stay away from scandal and helped to modernise the institution - allowing her two sons to marry commoners, for example. Today, the Danish monarchy is one of the most popular in the world, enjoying the support of more than 80 per cent of Danes. At 50 years and seven months on the throne, she is now the longest-reigning monarch in Europe following the death of her third cousin, Queen Elizabeth. She is trailed by her first cousin, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, who has been king for 48 years.
