publikcitizen Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 this is kinda giving me anxiety because her death will definitely have rippling repercussion in the coming years, at least at the political level. like many have said, she was the glue holding it all together. so we are in the unknown and how various countries like the US will be affected by this remains to be seen!

We can talk about the significance of the Queen's role on the world stage and how it's the end of an era for one of the most impactful countries while also acknowledging that the Monarchy is bad and the Royals have covered up a lot. Let's be adults. I actually think it’s simpler than that. Most people on English social media are Americans and, generally speaking, Americans don’t care about monarchies. So it’s easy for us to take on a flippant attitude about this historic event. A lot of whom Americans consider “royalty” are largely entertainers who had a more direct impact on our lives like through a classic film or unforgettable song. We don’t even necessarily look at our Presidents as royalty. The only ones we take significant note of are like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and FDR. With smaller cult followings for JFK, Reagan, Obama, and Trump. It’s just a different relationship than the British have with their monarchy.
Daydream Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 I always thought that the monarchy would fall about the moment the Queen died, but now the moment has come, it's apparent that things will just continue as business as usual. Charles and Camilla will not have as much affection from the GP as Elizabeth did, but things will keep ticking over.

I think the Monarchy will always be ‘popular’ in the UK. On a global scale tho, no one is going to think of Charles as a great man of stature that can hold together an empire (not even his own mother did)

People saying she's the glue that held all those commonwealth countries together are really weird, as if she was some sort of white saviour
KatyPrismSpirit Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Rip to Elizabeth. That said, i cant believe Camilla is going to be the Queen... Diana deserved this sm more she wouldve literally been the one who would revive the monarch for another 100 years but her husband had to be a disgusting
LastKiss Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Is Charles the oldest person to ascend to the throne ever?
Cyanide Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Wow I wonder what’s happening in the UK today and what the global ramifications of this will be

Combine that with social media just being who can say the most sensationalist thing for clicks and you can see why some people aren’t “taking it seriously” it’s easy to just live in your personal bubble and act like it won’t affect you personally but it’s foolish to pretend like this won’t have a worldwide effect in some way shape or form. Hard not to feel some sort of emotion at the thought of an end of an era. Really puts things into perspective.

However what Diana has is much more special than anything Camilla could ever have. Camilla may be queen [consort], but she isn't liked by the public. Diana is known as "the people's princess". She has most people's hearts and will be loved eternally.

It's not because she's some stellar head of state magnanimously beloved by her subjects, it's that they were waiting for her to die out of respect for her tenure.
liquiddiamonds Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 (edited) I see where some are coming from with the whole she was the glue, but the monarchy has a purpose that is still convenient for conservatives and the parliament. Without monarchs the spotlight would be 100% on them, which I don’t think its desirable. Although we know that the monarchy has lost a lot of power politically in the last hundred and half years, it still inhabits the popular imagination as a symbolism of duty, nationalism and politics. If Elizabeth’s death had happened at peak Charles vs Diana it would have been a tragedy for it, but it has taken place in a moment that Charles enjoys a better standing on public opinion, Camilla’s image has been sort of restored and William and Kate are well-liked enough. I think cutting expenses and a more loose approach to the commonwealth and other post-colonial institutions are the way to go until the monarchy no longer holds a domestic purpose, because they’ve been done as far as foreign policy goes. They will continue the process of becoming solely living relics of a british past, but cheaper to the public. I think Harry and Meghan lowkey didn’t see the same status for monarchy still in their lifetimes and started the process of distancing themselves and making money through businesses ventures Edited September 8, 2022 by liquiddiamonds
Maybe Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Shes with charles manson and michael jackson now.
Trash Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Sure it may be time for the monarchy to be abolished, but i lowkey want Charles and Camilla to resign and have William and Kate just becuase of this iconic photo.
Pikachoo Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 I can't believe she is gone. this hurts more than I thought. Whenever I would be suffering a panic attack, or thinking about Roe vs Wade being overturned, I would always think "the world keeps spinning and the Queen keeps living". yes. that was always my thought. "at least the Queen is still here". no matter what happened in my life; "The Queen is still here". and now shes gone.. the stability is gone. Thank you for everything you've done Your Majesty. You are at peace with God now.
