There were actually no changes to tradition, but instead The Queen gave her blessing for things to happen as they normally do.

 

When Prince Charles becomes King, Camilla's title will automatically be upgraded to Her Majesty Queen Camilla which is tradition for the wife of a reigning King. 

 

There *was* a publicly announced plan that Camilla would not get that upgrade and instead would be given the lesser title of Princess Camilla. This would have been a break/change from tradition and it was because she was so unpopular with the public after the Diana situation. A Princess consort title is rare. 

 

But The Queen did a 180 on that earlier this year and confirmed she wants Camilla (unfortunately) to be named Queen consort.

Even if Diana was still alive it wouldn't change anything as she was no longer officially a member of the Royal Family at the time of her death and was no longer in succession to be queen consort.

 

I think the monarchy will continue, probably still for generations to come, even if their popularity and prestige will inevitably take a hit once the Queen has passed. Most people who are anti-royal will continue to be so, and most people who are monarchists will continue to be so. It won't ever be the same, but I'm sure they will find a way for the monarchy to continue.
