album HYD - ‘CLEARING’

Mixed feelings about this cause I do like it a lot, but it feels like it could have been a lot better? Idk. The sounds are there, the vibe is there, vocals are unique. Plus Sophie produced stuff in 2022 Is incredible. The synths are beautiful. And there are AMAZING songs on here but like.........something is holding it back from being a classic. Maybe it's a bit too minimal? Or just a lil half-baked. Just needs a bit more of a punch BUTTTT im just nitpicking tbh. It's a really good album.

 

I will say though, Trust low-key sounds like something off of Midnights() and I do not like it

I really REALLY tried to like her but ugh, I just can't. 

 

I was excited because of how close Caroline worked with her but her debut EP came to me as an uninspired poor's man Caroline Polachek body of work. Not only the production but the vocals. The vocals are way too similar to Caroline's unique vocals. It was a big no for me even though I enjoyed a song or two. 

 

Then with this debut album I wanted to give her another shot. And the only two songs I really liked were Afar (again, Caroline... No surprise) and Trust. 

 

The rest was (to me) very underwhelming and life's af. 

 

I really wanted to like her, she seems very interesting and I adore how SOPHIE production was still there, such a lovely way to honor her.

Nnnnn I mean the ACCLAIM might be a lil……yeah lolll

 

i do like the album but yeah…….it should be BETTER. 

 

ngl I hate to say it…..but maybe the reason why this isn’t clicking is because of Hyd themself. I do like the vocals(although it can be very  at times) but something about them seems very…………Brooklyn art student with a hedge fund and bangs that was at the right place at the right time

good album overall but two or three songs were fillers

I replayed the album once again trying to find whatever people are raving about this album, I still don't hear it, it's too bland and lifeless to me.

I must admit Glass and Afar are probably has the most charming songs in here... plus I use the really cathartic chorus in So Clear, apart from that nothing else is giving me anything

I think a lot of people are looking over the fact Hyd is not a musician, and she didn't even study music. She was having fun, being friends with the right people and wrote some songs and had the money luck to work with them. This, as a debut album, is fine as ****. Of course some songs sound a little bit wonky, and some others sound like the quintessential sound of who produced it, but all in all it's not a bad record.

 

I do believe some of the EP songs are better than Clearing, and that's because Clearing was recorded way before the EP songs were. Like, way way WAY before. 

 

I know I'm biased as the utmost Polachek fan, but I do believe Afar, Skin 2 Skin, No Shadow and Glass are her best, followed by Oil + Honey, Living for You, So Clear and Breaking Ground. Those 8 songs would make an incredible debut album, put Into My Arms and you have an incredible debut record (in my humble opinion)
