Robert Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Quote Nicola Sturgeon has announced a rent freeze for public and private properties and a ban on winter evictions, in a package of measures “deliberately focused” on the cost of living crisis. Describing pressures on household budgets as a “humanitarian emergency”, Scotland’s first minister set out the annual programme for government as the Holyrood parliament met for the first time after the summer recess. Further commitments included: ScotRail fares being frozen until at least March 2023. Extending free school meals to primary 6 and 7 pupils. The creation in law of a national care service. A £25m Clyde mission decarbonisation fund to support zero emission heat projects and communal heating systems. Quote Brian Gilmour, whose company manages around 200 private lets, said the plan would see landlords forced to "pay for the government to look good". Mr Gilmour told the BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme that the policy was "reflective of people who make a decision that grabs a headline who don't understand the market-place they are talking about". Landlords already need to give three months' notice to tenants if they are going to increase rent, he pointed out, "and if the tenant feels the rent increase is disproportionate, they can appeal against it". "For me, it just a headline-grabbing statement that is getting private landlords, and social landlords, to pay for the government to look good," he said. Mr Gilmour argued that landlords also have to deal with rising costs, with increases in interest rates affecting mortgages, along with higher costs for buildings insurance. They will now not be able to pass on such cost increases, he said, adding that many people who rent out properties are private individuals, "not some multi-national company making a fortune". "What about the private landlord who is a retiree and this is part of their pension planning?" he asked. https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/06/nicola-sturgeon-announces-rent-freeze-for-tenants-in-scortland https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-62820909.amp
Illuminati Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Thoughts, prayers, L and ratio for the affected landlords
wraith Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Maybe it is time for landlords to get a job. Once again, happy for my country
Protocol Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Pls let England do this too, London rents are insane
Madonno Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Kinda agree I mean, what´s the argument for increase the rent every year? The ******* house-apartment is already built for years, there´s no logical reason for increasing the rent everytime. I can understand the increase for fruits, meals or resources affected by climate change, oil price, etc... but for house-apartment already built and paid? Just speculation.
Moloko Plus Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I absolutely loathe the term ‘landlord’. As if we’re still living in a feudal time period
Trent W Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 Are they going to freeze the rent from increasing it or stop paying all together? Stopping landlords from increasing it makes a lot of sense cause there needs to be a law that protects this abuse. Stop it all together would crease a massive amount of chaos.

They can’t increase rents and are banned from evicting people.

Love the not raising rent..but the banning evicting people is a bit iffy to me. Like, it’s their house/building. Also, you could just not pay rent at all then and they can’t evict you?

It doesn’t mean they can legally not pay rent but they can’t make someone homeless over unpaid rent. They did the same thing during Covid.

Some people will get too comfortable and abuse it. Both sides need to be held accountable.
