Gorgeous Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 Do you think social media will remain a thing of the XXI century or will it evolve till the end of humanity? Given all the mental health problems it may cause and how people are becoming less productive, will governments start to promote the limit of time spend on it every day? Do you think that limiting it will cause the social media apps to loose revenue, and in the longer term, shut down? More and more people are becoming more protective of their personal information, will this trend catch up to SM platforms? Real world information could still be delivered through messaging apps or lesser versions of twitter, advertising carrying through other channels, what are other alternatives to todays social media? Lets see what think pieces philATRLsophers come up with
HeavyMetalAura Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 I think it will stay around, but it will evolve. We’re already seeing this happening as Gen Z moves to TikTok. They aren’t interested in seeing people curate fake lives for themselves on Facebook or IG, share their relationship pics, vacation photos, etc. On TikTok, it’s all random and it’s more aimed at making “content” in the form of entertainment rather than posting long life updates about how you’re engaged or whatever. Which at first seemed like a healthy growth, but now it’s just a bunch of people competing for attention and seeing who can be the most outrageous. I imagine one day we’ll grow tired of that too. Maybe we already are. Hence BeReal taking off. So I don’t think it’s going anywhere unless society collapses, but I do think what it looks like/how we use it/the content being made with change dramatically
Trent W Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 The metaverse is next, by 2027 I can see the total domination. It might not be the facebook one, but a virtual reality is really coming to take over in the next decade.

But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t coming with a different and more efficient company. VR is coming to take over.

They are really pushing for it but the metaverse already exists in almost every online video game. People create identities, hang out with their friends and do just about everything imaginable already. I struggle to imagine what more can they bring that places like Second Life, IMVU and virtual concerts on Fortnite haven't done already years and decades ago. The only thing web3 metaverse can bring is corporations, more advertising, maybe some kind of a WeChat competitor and potentially some form of 3D Zoom for work, though I don't think companies that struggle to move on from Windows 98 computers will be joining anytime soon. They won't get everyone to wear VR sets for hours so it's gonna have to be something that encompasses all devices.
Oxy Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 The only thing that will make it weaker or less used, if the companies decide to make it a monthly payment. People won’t pay to socialize online when they can do it irl.

Aaron Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 I feel like humans will never give up the dopamine bursts that come from social media interactions. It may evolve into different forms but we’re never going back to a time without it.

Yes it already does, but they are obviously going to maximize the experience at some point. A large portion of people will obviously do so. Several companies are investing billions so obviously something big is coming with VR and those alternate metaverses. 27 minutes ago, ChapelHooker said: VR won't take off, it already would've. The one from facebook will flop because Gen Z and Millennials loathe the meta/facebook corporation, but other companies are investing billions too, someone will get it right. It probably hasn’t taken off globally because the technology so far has been primitive. But that will change.

Apple are rumoured to be releasing their VR headset next year too They hold a lot of power and influence to be able to help it go mainstream
RihFenty20 Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 I love alot of these answers and most of them do give an indication of where social media is heading (better VR) but all of these ideas are given with the assumption that the earth isn't on fire currently. I think the death of the planet will cause social media's downfall.

KnightOfAllRealms Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 It will evolve to the point where we're all put in cryogenic containers while mentally we move in to a Virtual Universe where we can be anything or anyone and fulfill all our basic needs and wildest desires
KnightOfAllRealms Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 (edited) The elites who want to unplug will be carted off to a an exclusive base in Mars, I think While us normies are stuck in the metaverse Edited September 4, 2022 by KnightOfAllRealms

BUT You forgot to also mention the pics or stories on IG of who can throw a better birthday party “for their kids” and all the pics you see is moms in high heels competing for the “best” outfit lol even tik tok Is getting annoying to be honest, everybody is an influencer now with their horrible acting. FB has turned into the preferred platform for older family members IG like I said, soccer moms and newly singles competing on “growth” and who is living their best life Tik Tok everybody is an influencer twitter - everybody is a p orn star now or catfish central with recycled pics lol To answer your question I think we will all eventually grow tired of each other lol and that will be the end of social media, but I’m sure another platform will emerge. John Slayne Posted September 4, 2022 Posted September 4, 2022 It will inevitably change but people will always want to communicate and share with each other, so social media in some form will always be here unless the internet gets completely banned or something.
MadonnasBoyfriend Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 It will get played out and peopl3 will use it less and less but not really

CottageHore Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 As others have mentioned, the metaverse is where it’s headed next. No way in hell social media is about to be eradicated. We’re still at the very early stages of its development. TikTok has only been relevant for 2.5 years. I really don’t think we have much mental bandwidth for another social media app, though, so it’s definitely just evolving into something more immersive. This is our new reality.
