Hector Posted August 24, 2022 Posted August 24, 2022 To celebrate the release of Hold Me Closer, we've compiled the lists and crunched the numbers to present the Official and up-to-date ranking of Britney's most successful singles and albums in the UK. Let's get stuck in. 10. Piece Of Me Album: Blackout Released: 2007 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 2 Total UK chart units: 427,000 A masterclass in how take back control of your own narrative, Piece Of Me also contains uncredited background vocals from none other than Swedish pop princess Robyn. 9. Circus Album: Circus Released: 2008 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 13 Total UK chart units: 462,000 The energetic title track from Britney's sixth studio album is perhaps best remembered for its kitsch music video, where Brit genuinely seems to be having the time of her life. It was directed by Francis Lawrence, known for helming Lady Gaga's Bad Romance video and three of The Hunger Games films. 8. Everytime Album: In The Zone Released: 2004 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1 Total UK chart units: 562,000 A rare Britney Spears single written by Britney herself, Everytime is a tender piano ballad that many have taken as a response to the break-up with her then-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. Its iconic music video, helmed by David LaChappelle, forms as an eerily prescient reminder of the insidious media presence surrounding Britney at the height of her fame. 7. Sometimes Album: ...Baby One More Time Released: 1999 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 3 Total UK chart units: 584,000 Britney may not be the biggest fan of the perky Sometimes, but those looking for a modern-day re-interpretation should seek out queer pop trio MUNA's reverential cover released this year for the film Fire Island. 6. Gimme More Album: Blackout Released: 2007 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 3 Total UK chart units: 596,000 Blackout's lead single was an instant classic; a dark and glitzy electro-pop smash that has quietly influenced an entire generation of dance music, and helped usher in EDM supremacy. Also features one of the greatest opening lines, naturally. 5. Womanizer Album: Circus Released: 2008 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 3 Total UK chart units: 835,000 Lest we forget Britney's chaotic yet highly iconic performance of the juddering Womanizer in that year's X Factor, where she then had to stay on stage and very respectfully try to answer Dermot O'Leary's questions about the finalists despite clearly not having a clue as to who any of them were. 4. Oops! I Did It Again Album: Oops! I Did It Again! Released: 2000 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1 Total UK chart units: 931,000 When Max Martin looked at all the success of ...Baby One More Time and said, how about that...but more? Oops! is a brilliant pop single, and its timelessness is proved by the fact is contains a Titanic reference in its iconic middle eight, a film that was already three years old by the time it was released. Also: red catsuit. 3. Scream & Shout (with will.i.am) Album: #willpower Released: 2012 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1 Total UK chart units: 1.3 million Britney's sixth and most recent UK Number 1 single, will.i.am collaboration Scream & Shout claims the title of her most-digitally downloaded track in the UK, with 880,000 of them. 2. Toxic Album: In The Zone Released: 2004 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1 Total UK chart units: 1.3 million Just as sonically innovative and exciting today as it was in 2004, the clarity of vision on Toxic is crystal clear. A Number 1 hit in the UK (a feat it never achieved in Brit's native US), Toxic has UK chart units totally 1.3 million and is also Britney's most-streamed track in the UK; with 96 million streams in total. Spare a thought for Kylie Minogue, though, who had the opportunity to record Toxic and turned it down! 1. ...Baby One More Time Album: ...Baby One More Time Released: 1999 Official Singles Chart peak: Number 1 Total UK chart units: 2 million There are many, many ways you can explain the brilliance of ...Baby One More Time, but one of the greatest debut singles of all time sounds about right. Proof that Britney knew herself and her career better than anyone else at the time, she rejected a cartoon-ish pitch for the music video, instead demanding it be set in a high school. The rest, as they say, is history. Baby One More Time is still Britney's biggest track in the UK, with a total of over 2 million chart units to its name. It's also her most physically purchased single (1.4 million units) and most-viewed music video (over 10 million video streams). What makes it even more impressive? Baby One More Time - written entirely by a then up and coming Max Martin, still in his production infancy - was actually turned down by the Backstreet Boys and TLC. But Britney, recovering from a hangover on the day she recorded the career-defining track, took it in her stride. And one of the most successful pop partnerships in pop history was born. Toxic, for example, was the 9th best selling single of 2004 and barely scanned 200K. Now it's up to 1.3M thanks to downloads and streams. OIDIA landed at #15 on the 2000 YEC with 400K. Now it's nearing 1M. Everytime didn't even hit 200K despite #18 on the 2004 YEC. Now it's nearing 600K. Going Platinum back then is definitely not the same as going Platinum now. And yes, she had several hits during the digital era but that's when she stopped promoting in the UK. Blackout, Femme Fatale and Britney Jean had 0 promo performances. Circus and Glory only had one each.

And when she went to the UK in 2011, she had politicians over her accusing her of promoting gun violence FF was a flop there anyways, why the fake shock
