You have to protect yourself to no be ruined by your ex. The only advantage of marriage are that taxes are more convenient and there’s spousal benefits. Marriage is usually good for tax reasons, for the ability of both parents to have equal rights when it comes to their children, etc.. When ur longterm boyfriend is sick in the hospital or had severe accident, as a partner, you wouldn't have any rights to visit him right off the bat. As the husband however, things look differently. It's not just a "document", it doesn't even have to be a religious ceremony if you don't want it to be but there are a whole HEAP of legal benefits afforded to married couples, especially if they have children.
