The letter, also addressed to U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, was signed by 71 economists and academic experts, many based in the United States as well as Germany, India and the United Kingdom. Among them was former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis and Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor who received the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001 and is on the advisory board to the Washington-based think tank the Center for Economic and Policy Research, which organised the letter.

I was gonna agree with what he said tho. Like why now? The US has had this for what? 15-20 years? And now is the time to act?

And give it to who? The taliban? :rip: You’re delusional to think this will help anything but fund middles and violence

So the Taliban can have it?

The US froze the reserves of the Afghan Central Bank in August 2021.

That's not how banking works. Hundreds of millions of dollars frozen are the life savings and bank accounts of Afghan citizens.

Afghan citizens would not be getting any of that money.

This isn't true and the letter linked debunks this kind of theory and that's not even the criticism that those within the national security sector against releasing the reserves are making.

They claim that releasing the funds would be a 'symbolic' win for the Taliban and that relieving pressure from the sanctions and asset freeze would give room for the people to become endeared to the Taliban.

The US has said it would recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan if it met certain human rights measures (making no mention of terrorism), and thus could release the funds since there'd finally be a government it recognizes in place, but the leading global organizations on human rights have said leveraging the capitalization of the Afghan economy to achieve this is over-reach by the US and wrong:

If it's their money they should give it to them, regardless of the atrocious things they are doing to women, children, etc. because at the end of the day those will be suffering even more hunger and violence.
