Gwendolyn Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Domino’s Pizza Inc.’s footprint in the home of Pizza proved to be short lived with Italians favoring local restaurants over the American version. The last of Domino’s 29 branches have closed after the company started operations in the country seven years ago. It borrowed heavily for plans to open 880 stores, but faced tough competition from local restaurants expanding delivery services during the pandemic and sought protection from creditors after running out of cash and falling behind on its debt obligations. The US chain entered Italy in 2015 through a franchising agreement with ePizza SpA and planned to distinguish itself by providing a structured national delivery service along with American-style toppings including pineapple. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-08-09/domino-s-pizza-leaves-italy-as-traditional-margherita-wins?
Gwendolyn Posted August 9, 2022 Author Posted August 9, 2022 I had no idea Dominos had italian shops its not surprising it flopped when italian grandma's authentic and tasty pizzeria is nearby..
Rev8 Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 What did they expect they have great pizzas tho, obvi but poor them for missing out on the pineapple pizza, weak taste buds
mercurialworld Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Mama mia...I'm not surprised. If you can't do it better than the Italians, then don't even try.
Illuminati Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Who thought this was a good idea There's no one more food pretentious than Italians, miss @KillingYourCareer is a prime example
byzantium Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Isn't dominoes whole business model making cheap pizzas in car oriented suburbs for larger groups?
Beyonnaise Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 When I studied abroad in Rome I got sick of the thin Italian style pizza. Like yeah it’s technically higher quality and more ~gourmet~ but I always craved American pizza on messy drunk nights.
Da Vinci Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Do people actually enjoy pineapples on pizza or is it just for the sake of novelty
Bloodflowers. Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Oh wow @KillingYourCareer rejecting modernity and capitalism and embracing traditional homade Italian culture
Vrajesh Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Kinda reminds me of walmart trying IT in the german supermarket industry and running back after1 year
G.U.Y. Gaga Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Is Starbucks in Italy yet. It wasn’t yet when I was abroad lol
bliaz Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Like Taco Bell in Mexico. Get out of here with your horrendous imitation food
IBeMe Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Coffee shops and pizzerias really shouldn't even try it in Italy lol
Pikachoo Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 (edited) now's Papa Germanotta chance to swoop in and open up a few Joanne Trattorias Edited August 9, 2022 by Pikachoo
ontherocks Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Why would anybody want Domino's when you can have a real italian pizza which in Italy is probably also cheaper and tastes waaay better?

They brought pizzas for everyone along, they weren't bad, but they were of course overpriced and to us a restaurant chain is AUTOMATICALLY fast food, and fast food must be cheap garbage. Because of their expensive prices while having fast food status, Domino's was doomed on arrival.

toy soldier. Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 I am Italian but I have been living in London for 7 years, for me Dominos it's not really pizza, it's just doughy food. It's good, I like it, but it's not really pizza. Italians don't care about anything they have, they don't care about art, they don't care about the beautiful towns, but if you mess with pizza (and football) they'll riot lol OT: I am ashamed to admit that I don't mind pineapple on pizza
Hephaestus Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 Some companies/chains are simply not meant to operate in certain countries/markets, especially when locals can offer a better version of their products/services (usually at a smaller price too).

I don't get how people enjoy peppers on pizza but I don't care what others eat.
