Spoiler

I think there was a way to have the best of both worlds for this film but Todd just failed so hard in delivering a balance. A true "follie a deux"...the DANCE between Joker and Harley.... It was nowhere to be found. The ending that Todd chosecould have still worked and made the point Todd wanted while also giving a level of performance/showmanship in the film we were all expecting.

There was soooo much potential for Gaga's Harley.... it's such a waste we got so little background on her or a moment where we see her true descent into madness. Why not show her being obsessed with Joker? Posters of him in her home and buying his old apartment? Setting things up with the press? The desire to PUT ON A SHOW that drove Lee.....It would have perfectly matched the commentary Todd wanted of people idolizing the idea of Joker and made the film more well rounded. When Harley says "let's give the people what they want", like, we all wanted a dark musical killing spree scene of Harley and Joker around Gotham. It would have been so iconic. Like the "Couple of Swells" rumors.....

imagine Joker and Harley dusting themselves off after the explosion.... performing this number all sick and twisted around Gotham and going on a rampage leading to the steps...... would have been ICONIC.

Even when Lee left the courtroom.....show her breakdown...show her cutting her hair....setting up the bomb.. all while singing That's Entertainment... a amazing sequence was RIGHT THERE and a perfect arc ending with the leaked footage of her going crazy singing the finale of That's Entertainment on the steps getting Joker arrested... we all wanted that and it would have been amazing to see Gaga perform that like.... like NOBODY ELSE could....

I guess I got caught in the hype of those leaks and the potential it had knowing what Gaga is capable of and the idea of something truly unique with a dark murder musical we have never seen before.... but again.. I guess that's the point Todd wanted to make. UGH

Some of these "the movie was terrible on purpose because you expected a good movie and you don't deserve one" takes I'm seeing on this page. :deadbanana:

I can see it now "Please WB, give me $200m to spend on a movie no one will want to see" "Yeah Todd, that sounds like a good investment of our money. We're in!"

Running out to tell all my friends now that they won't like the movie but they should spend money on it because we deserve to throw money away.

This is a widespread sentiment not just atrl. If you know that todd hated how the movie was perceived you'd know that it's not that crazy of a theory at all. Subversion & shock factor for the sake of it has been a thing in the industry for a while. :michael:

Her facial expression and voicetone are weak. I am not saying she's a horrible actress and I do think she's slightly above the average for MPG standards but far away from other A star actors. Just because you like Gaga does not mean she excels in everything. Acting for her should be considered more of a hobby not a household name like she's in music area.

LOL! Got so many downvotes for dis. :heart2:

The truth will come out.

I mean, it's such an odd choice. You could have gone with HoG or AHS, where she at least chose a risky way to play a character. But no other truth will come out of her acting debut in ASIB, for which she was literally acclaimed by the trifecta: audience, press, peers.

I also saw it again last night and it's much easier to digest rewatching it. Don't think I'd see it again and they really could have made a better movie but it's not bad, an audience % in the 30s is ridiculous :deadbanana2:

While I didn't love it, I definitely didn't hate it either. The hate train is far too strong for this

My God, I can enjoy musicals, but even I was getting tired every time you could notice they were gonna break into a song :deadbanana4:

I kinda had to chuckle during those bits because you could tell people at the movie theater were getting frustrated and moving uncomfortably in their seats :dies:

wonder how it'll compre to other flop follow-ups to billion dollar movies:

Captain Marvel -82%

Alice in Wonderland -71%

Aquaman -62%

Well it wasn't as terrible as I thought but it was so unnecessary :gaycat6:

Let's not pretend the movie wasn't seen as a disaster from the start. Who thought turning it into a musical was a good idea? The acting isn't strong enough to salvage it either. This film has all but destroyed the franchise.

When I called the movie atrocious after the trailer dropped, a certain fanbase spent the whole month mass disliking my posts. Now that it's widely agreed the film is one of the worst in recent memory, they've gone completely silent :toofunny2:

It makes me sad, I love Gaga, I love musicals, and I quite liked the first Joker, but this was not it :gaycat6:

I'll keep Harlequin (The hit full of classics album) and run :gaycat6:

The fact it got an audience score worse than 'Cats' is ludicrous. Another proof that RT needs to remove that feature if they can't properly police it, review bombing is predictable nowadays

Just watched it an hour ago

Spoiler

My thoughts are that some of the songs could have been cut (the ones that aren't in full blown fantasy land, where I think it does serve to show Arthur fully retreating into his own mind for escapism) as it drags the scenes out too long. With some of the parts clearly being in Arthur's imagination it does add credence to speculation on the actuality of the final two scenes.

At the very least some prison scenes could have been cut after the trial starts.

I don't really blame people for thinking the plot is thin or that it spends too long on courtroom processions, but it seems more... observational in the sense of watching Arthur unravel as his psyche is damaged again and again; the witness questioning is clearly very triggering for him, especially with his mom's emotional abuse, and on top of Harley/Gaga and his fans imposing a projection of what they want on him - it pushes him away from his personhood, but to be him is to be constantly demeaned and insulted, and the Joker commands respect and awe. So comes the schism.

I think it was refreshing for Harley to be the one manipulating Arthur/Joker in this iteration instead of the classic depiction of Joker being a domestic abuser.

Is it just me or are the tides turning a little bit?

Some people are starting to push back against the narrative that this is the worst film of the year.

We can all agree it's not as good as the first movie (not even close) but it is not by any means a terrible movie, even if it has plenty of issues.

32% tomatometer (certified rotten) AND audience score, lowest cinemascore ever for a comic book movie nothing but hate and ridicule on the timeline

The hate train on Thursday-Friday was almost unanimous. Whereas now there are some people defending the film. No one is claiming it's a masterpiece or something but it's not as bad as some people are making it out to be.

Time is the ultimate truth teller.

Based on what I see on the net, I think it's getting even worse as the movie is being released in more and more countries

Saw the movie last night and it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, even if it was really boring. I actually liked the musical segments and thought they were beautifully shot :sorry: I think if this idea had fallen into more capable hands, JFAD could've worked as a musical.

Like others have said, the biggest disappointment is how they used Lee. Would've liked to see them do something way more substantial. For example, begin with a Bonnie and Clyde angle with them on the run from Arkham/committing crimes along the way. In the second act, have a shift in character arc where Arthur slowly realize Lee is more insane/dangerous than he is (i.e., Lee becomes the hunter, Arthur the hunted). I think Gaga would devour a version of Lee that's more akin to Glen Close in 'Fatal Attraction'.

You get the sense that Lee is actually much more dangerous/scarier than Arthur but that doesn't really go anywhere :rip: Just wasted potential all around.
