Kansas Votes Down Abortion Ban

I've always said Kansas is well on its way to becoming full-fledged swing state. The expansion of Kansas City westward is driving this change in rapid speed.

I want to know what the Kansas representatives have to say about this :clown:

Roe v. Wade being overturned made pro-life policies even less popular :dies:

The Federalist Society has pretty much ensured that they're gonna erode whatever's left of their anti-abortion movement, the overturning was its dying breath

The problem is that referendums like this one will be rare, Republican-led states will mostly use the legislature where people choose candidates and not issues, party lines, where districts can be gerrymandered, etc... Although it is OBVIOUS that bans are wildly unpopular.  Be that as it may, I'm guessing that before the 2024 GE there'll be 8 or so states wiith total bans and another 10 or so with Texas-like bills... If not more.

Kansas said "We want progressive policies, NOT Biden" :clap3:

Bernie did win the primary here over Hillary

Still important to remember that materially progressive policy will always resonate with people - the universality of progressivism proves it superior - and thus Dems should always be as left-wing as possible via litmus tests.

In fact, when you do this and take a chance, people just might as well surprise you:

Kansas not only doesn't buy into anti-abortion hysteria but also rejects anti-trans hysteria too :heart2:

Agreed

People often don't understand KS in modern times is more of a fiscally conservative state than a socially conservative state and it's going to continue to get more purple over time

People can try to claim the US is a "center-right" country but its people are clearly not.

Imagine if people just listened to progressives all along. :toofunny3:

Very much this :clap3:

The brainwashing and propaganda in the U.S. is extremely effective in conditioning the American people to think socialism = bad. The reality is that the people are much, much progressive than they think they are. But the propaganda machine has made it so they don’t even realize that and won’t ever admit. What will it take for them to face reality?

Just another insane, infuriating quirk about minority rule.

Kansas still has some of the most restrictive abortion laws of those states that don't prohibit abortion. IIRC, you get 10 weeks to have the procedure. Also, if you are a minor, good luck getting one as everyone involved has to sign off on it.

I don't disagree that candidates focused on actual material issues, and popular ones at that, are way more powerful than performative candidates or candidates that support unpopular ones :rip: But the system in America is so incredibly contaminated with stuff that doesn't really interest people, only corporate America, that sometimes it's hard to drive things forward.

I'm pessimistic about the short-term outlooks for abortion rights in a huge chunk of America simply because economy usually rules above all else and Democrats are headed for a very bad cycle in 2022-2024, but considering how unpopular bans are, I'm guessing most of the ones outiside of those 2-3 ultra red states in the country could get overturned if the grassroots movements do a good job over time.

Pleasantly surprised about this. Abortion bans are more unpopular than I thought. The GOP might need to adjust their position here if they don’t want to lose voters

The way the GOP (likely) ****** themselves because of this :rip: this is an R+17 state, in a GOP dominated primary, and they still lost by almost 20 points :rip: access to abortion is widely popular across the country, this is their midterm to lose, and they very likely lost themselves some house seats and possibly the senate because they can’t control themselves and their extremism :rip:

Good for Kansas.

Politicians (Democrats) are so ******* useless. Especially your embarrassing president.

When something like this happens in a red state, you know you've f*cked up big time.
