She was the epitome of class, grace, beauty, and talent. She had it all, really. Fun fact though, the Black community continued to drag her after they saw this music video (even after the I Wanna Dance with Somebody controversy) because they thought she was still selling out. Why? The love interest in the video looked racially ambiguous. You couldn't tell what race he was, but he surely wasn't Black. Come to find out, he was a wealthy, Italian man from NYC who owned an upscale restaurant. I found him. His name was Brad Johnson and they were actually dating at the time. Mistah.Beyonce Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 I prefer the iconic It’s Not Right dark look.

They dated for most of 1988. There’s even a picture of him with Houston in London when she performed at Wembley that year. They split because, the rumour is, he had children from a previous relationship he didn’t tell Houston about; the deceit completely ruined the relationship for her. That’s what her Bodyguard said in his biography.
Jude Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 Yes. Sad her substance addiction ruined everything including her beauty.

The music industry had become integrated but audiences, and radio to an extent, were still so segregated by genres and styles and formats. No other BLACK WOMAN (as a solo artist) had EVER reached the heights that Whitney Houston did, at that time, particularly on an international scale. Ms. Houston opened the Grammy awards for FOUR YEARS IN A ROW (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989). Her 1989 opening had performing in a white dress, with a full orchestra behind her, singing centre-stage and receiving a standing ovation before the song even finished. This was the peak of her being America’s Sweetheart and the night she certified herself as a legend. Those that booed her that night were simply jealous of her success and stature. This is why I’m so happy that both Anita Baker and Regina Belle, who were the R&B darlings at that time, mentioned her in their speeches during the show thereafter and thanked her for being so kind and pleasant to them. They knew the weight that Ms. Houston was carrying on her shoulders and they supported her. Thankfully, the vast majority of Black America supported her too, and loved her. Back when a standing ovation actually meant something ot: she was a model. We been knew she was a 10
Witch Privilege Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought of All The Man That I Need. She's truly just gorgeous in so many of her videos, though.

We know parts of the Black community are misogynistic as hell, it was even worst then. Also, I believe the reason why M.J’s circumstances were IGNORED a lot of the time was due to stature. M.J had already been seen/viewed as a legend in the eyes of many people, particularly the Black GP. He’d already paid his dues with the Jackson 5, his solo albums including already having one which was the biggest in history at that point. To many he had paved the way. They excused a lot of his behaviour and personal predicaments because he was respected. This is also why they didn’t go after Tina Turner despite her being a full on Hard Rock act in the mid-1980’s and having almost no Black people on her team, band etc. Whitney Houston, on the other hand, debuted and simply took off like a rocket. Automatically, she was bigger than every other female act who debuted before her or around the same time. She didn’t have to wait to crossover others like did, Pop and AC audiences were infatuated with her just as R&B audiences were. People were envious and looked for anything to criticise or scrutinise her about. Her making Pop music and ballads that were less “soulful” and having racially ambiguous love interests in her videos just added to the controversy. Donna Summer received the same responses too and she talked about that. You know what I mean? Edited July 27, 2022 by GoodGuyGoneGhetto

If you must know, Michael HATED the final Bad album cover. He did not like what the label did to his appearance and was actually quite mad about it. And the reason he had to lighten his skin was because it was happening naturally anyway due to his vitiligo except it was blotchy meaning he had to go through hell every day using make-up to hide it, so he took control and evened it out. But you already knew this since the world has known for decades but continues to spew dumbfounded lies.

It’s a good point you brung up Tina. Supposedly, Ike went on Arsenio and said “you know Tina think she white, don’t you?” and I literally cannot find it. My Dad always talks about it. It might’ve been a different show or interview, but mess
GlamSlam Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 (edited) It's funny because Whitney was always criticized for her voice, but nobody ever really spoke about how gorgeous she was. I think she was even more beautiful in this video, tbh... Edited July 27, 2022 by GlamSlam

Planet Mars Posted July 27, 2022 Posted July 27, 2022 She will always be the most beautiful pop girl to me. I mean, absolutely stunning from head to toe, she looked immaculate on WDBHG? though. Fun fact, it was watching this music video that convinced Kevin Costner that Whitney was meant to star alongside him in the Bodyguard movie.

And it’s absolutely hilarious. People using vitiligo as an excuse as to why his skin color changed, but why didn’t he use makeup that would blend in with his brown skin? If it was only ‘patchy in certain areas”, why not just use the darker makeup to blend in with the rest of his body? Why go the other direction on the color palette? Then the nose job and the straight hair. Please.
