Recast the Weeknd, cut the cringy '50 shades of grey' scenes and the show is actually good.

Lily Rose is good.

I can't at Abel wanting to play the 'Tombeur de femmes' without even showing a harm in a cheap ugly wig, it's not realistic at all :rip:

Regardless, his performance is so bad, he's truly giving 'dead behind the eyes', he doesn't have charisma or charme at all on camera, a famous gorgeous popstar falling in that way for him is not credible at all and the worst part is that I think he's truly in that way in the real life.

Based of that Rolling Stone exposé, you can tell what elements he/Levinson wanted to add lol :dies:

To be fair to him tho, i don't think he wanted the show to be focused primarily on the hardships of being a popstar. The whole thing feels like a vanity project to show off his basic ~cinephile taste and what better partner to help with that than Levinson.... It's kinda funny/ironic that the audience is completely turned off by the whole thing :rip:

2nd episode was okay, the whole music video ordeal felt like a Black Swan skit but i dug it mainly thanks to Depp. Second part with Abel was just bad... I'll give the third episode a chance because it's fun to watch despite its flaws.

I think the show is about mainly about the life of basically any girl in the music industry, but personally, it seems like The Weeknd also took some inspiration from Selena and Britney mostly. The Weeknd and Selena were even dating at some point so it would make sense for him to base this about her. Another plot similar is Selena's best friends are also her assistents AND live with her lol :deadbanana2:

wait, lmao theresa and selena :deadbanana2:

Exactly, I was about to say it in my previous posts, it truly feels like an uneccessary vanity project by his side while basically playing himself (the popstar) who sings about sex that has all the women at his feet.

The initial direction for this was indeed the right one and being focused on the hardships of being a popstar from a female point of view with some elements of 'Succession' when it comes to the business parts with team meetings, money-label issues and so on, those are the best moments of the show, Lily Rose is very good in the role, she's credible in the popstar role, it's the only reason I'm interested to watch, hopefully the Weeknd parts won't drag the whole show down but I fear it's inevitable with the next episodes.

I'm curious on how the initial version of this was...

I'm sure it was so much better since it was more incentered on Lily Rose character and the popstar struggles from a female point of view but the Weeknd wasn't on board with that and wanted more space for his character and sex on the show

Abel Tesfaye, who performs as The Weeknd, co-created the series with Levinson and Reza Fahim. He is understood to have been unhappy with the creative direction of the show, which is thought to have already filmed footage for around four or five episodes.

The crux of the issue appears to be that Tesfaye, felt the show was leaning too much into a “female perspective”, according to sources, with co-star Lily Rose Depp’s character rather than his own. Rose Depp remains on board and a key part of the show following its creative overhaul.

The series had been previously directed by Amy Seimetz with Depp's role as the key protagonist, however, Seimetz exited the project.

Subsequently, Rolling Stone reported on the production and alleged that after Seimetz's departure, executive producer Sam Levinson scrapped the nearly completed shoot for the "$54-75 million project" and rewrote and reshot the entire series.

Rolling Stone claims that other individuals in the production felt alienated by Levinson and Tesfaye's changes, with them dubbing some scenes "a rape fantasy" and said that some shoots "went from satire to the thing it was satirizing".

A source told the publication that Tesfaye wanted to "tone down the cult aspect of the storyline and pivot into something else entirely, dropping the ‘feminist lens’ through which the show was being told as a result".

it’s the fact that people are still going on and on about Abel not being “sexy” for this part when literally this is the whole point :rip: you’re not supposed to find this character sexy wtf??? the point is to feel uneasy and weirded out by the whole thing, you’re not supposed to like him or want to bottom for him on grindr you freaks.

imagine watching something that triggers you so much and complaining about it constantly instead of maybe…stop watching? :deadbanana2:

I keep repeating this too lol Thats exactly what he’s character is supposed to give. A creep that gets what he wants. Unfortunately that also happens in real life, so even though The Weeknd can’t really act - it’s still giving something!

If it was some really hot charming dude, it wouldn’t make as much sense. We are not supposed to fall for him, but OBVIOUSLY a broken rich industry girl would. She wants (and lowkey desires) someone to control her.

I have this feeling that in the end, as much as I dislike Sam Levison, the show will be an interesting representation of the industry. Disgusting as a whole.

Abel looks like a cuddly teddy bear and can't act - he's obviously miscast and it's annoying to see him on screen. People are going to complain. He completely sabotages the suspension of disbelief that Lily Depp creates in the first half of ep 2. We keep watching for her.

Tedros' entourage sucks as well - bleached brows' lines are extremely cringeworthy and he can't act for ****.

This? Like the character is supposed to look like a creep, he's supposed to make you feel grossed out and everything, the point is exactly that these kind of creeps are in positions of power in the music industry. Now I do agree Abel isn't a good actor and not very credible, but that's not because of the looks.

Also I didn't really get Chloe the new girl? What is she doing hiding behind curtains and ****?

We all got this argument and he's lacking the creep vibe as well, like somebody said he's giving teddy bear (in a bad wig), not bad guy, he's not gross, not to mention you still need to create some realistic dynamics and situations in order to justify a famous hot rich popstar falling for a creep, instead they made her hooking up with him the moment he saw him in the club, there's still has to be some sort of charme even to play the dark-creep guy and he's missing that as well.

all I say is I literally had NO idea that the whole world found these following to be charming, sexy, charismatic, big dick energy, etc.:

(for example) and that it had nothing to do with the victims’ point of view and traumas and what they are personally seeking out. Yes, Abel is not a FANTASTIC actor, but to keep harping on the fact that he’s not sexy enough for this part will still be weird to me, point blank.

Dumb comparison, people who followed those cult leaders weren't hot millionaires from the entertainment business who hooked up with them at the club the first moment they saw them but they followed them for their ideas-preaches in very different kind of social contexts after listen to their speeches for several time and clearly they had the intelligence, charisma and ability to manipulate people, once again features we haven't seen on Abel character who has been introduced immediately as a cheap version of Christian Grey as already underlined in previous arguments but I guess reading comprehension is not for everyone.

Strong episode and amazing performance from Lily. The way the episode then took a giant nosedive as soon as The Weeknd came in with that cringe Wattpad porn scene :bibliahh:

They need to just focus on Lily since that's where this show shines. This whole Weeknd/Sam obsession with just exploiting Lily's willingness to give her all by writing these unwanted sex scenes are such an obstruction to what could be a great show.

Yeah Lily Rose is a natural. Her dad's acting genes def came through. :jonny:

When you don't have valid argumentations in order to clap back, it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubts.

Lily Rose deserved better than this mess.

I didn't think the show was that bad. It was watchable. A bit cringe and faux-edgy but it was fine. RIP

Ew. The fact that we could’ve had a decent show about Jocelyn’s struggles/downfall into madness but some fragile, pervy men had to step in and ruin things, as usual. I hate this world.

This episode should've just been the final dinner table scene. That was so good it almost obscured how bad the rest was. Lily is such a force in this role

Loved this new episode, particularly the dinner scene. I like how things are slowly unfolding. Also, Tedros is getting more and more insufferable.

Spoiler

The Weeknd is sick for thinking that recreating childhood trauma and displaying it in a cinematic manner is a good idea for a TV show. I was never a fan of his music or persona but now the sheer sight of his face makes me wanna puke. I can’t help but think that he’s exactly like that irl. Anyway, I genuinely hope Jocelyn’s team is gonna pull through and save her at the end.
