justinxx Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 Constance revealed that she attempted suicide after the controversy after she said she was unhappy Fresh Off the Boat was renewed for its final season. Glad she's coming back. https://twitter.com/ConstanceWu/status/1547661204545359877?s=20&t=5w0X2VJ6zruBXUGNslJbcg
nathanspears Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 I hope she's okay now I wonder if this is why the Crazy Rich Asians sequels have been delayed?
Peep Show Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 (edited) I‘m glad she‘s okay, but I still think that her comments were very nasty & disrespectful to the entire cast and crew. It really made me not like her, but I hope she has changed and learned from her mistakes. Edited July 14, 2022 by Peep Show
Dula Peep Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 isn't she in that new Republican gun Amazon movie?
Eóghan Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 One of the best asian actresses out there. I'm glad she's doin better. I was wondering why she disappeared completely after "Hustlers; she had such a promising career. I'm on the team that she had every rights to speak her mind about her career trajectory and people attacked her for being entitled when she simply didn't want to be stuck in a job that made her unhappy and took away job opportunities. Contracts can really **** you up and she was brave to voice it out. Cast and crew had nothing to do with it. At the end of the day she was goin to fulfil that contract to the end, so I don't know why people thought she was disrespecting them just because she voiced her anger towards executives who renewed the show. Her opinion wasn't goin to change a single thing, everyone involved in the show was still goin to keep their job no matte what. Free speech is still free speech. 7 minutes ago, Peep Show said: I‘m glad she‘s okay, but I still think that her comments were very nasty & disrespectful to the entire cast and crew. Vermillion Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 I hope she continues to find peace and has a solid network around her. The last thread on her comments was a complete cluster**** so I hope this one doesn't go south. 17 minutes ago, Dula Peep said: isn't she in that new Republican gun Amazon movie? You're thinking of the Amazon series starring Chris Pratt (says it all really) that went #1, The Terminal List, that got destroyed by critics for being an insurrectionist jingoistic white-trash wet dream. Kind of like The American Sniper controversy except wasway worse. Pratt's defense during the press tour for the series for his comments controversy on his ex-wife and their premature kid were BS too. And yes, she's in it. It's certainly severely dampened my opinion of her, but she hasn't had to answer as to why she chose to do it unless I missed it and someone can point me to it. When you're Asian in Hollywood, not sure how else to put this, but you take the projects you can. That she chose that I need to see more info on before making any final judgments.
Oscar Isaac Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 My memory of this mess is nebulous because this was years ago, but I don’t remember anything she did warranting being called a blight on an entire community by another actress?? Who the hell did that???
Hot Volcano Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 I remember evem some ATRL members bullyig her...
Venom Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 As a fan of Fresh Off the Boat, I was surprised by her comments about the show. Jessica is such a gay icon. However, we do tend to forget that even if you’re working on a TV show, it’s still a job. Not everyone likes to stay at certain jobs for long periods. Especially when it gets in the way of more exciting opportunities.
Sharapov Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 imdb tells me she hasnt stopped working so what break from hollywood is she talking about??
Bloodflowers. Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 She was great in Hustlers, hope she gets more opportunities because we need strong Asian brand names in Hollywood and she is up there with Sandra Oh, Lucy Liu and Awkwafina

Robert Pattinson and a bunch of actors literally joke about how much they hate shows/films they’ve done and people turn it into a meme, why is it different in her case?

Right, even our own faves hate on entire albums, songs, videos which is rude to the producers, managers, visual artists, directors and whole team but it's okay. I do think her comment was a bit harsh, but it did not warrant ANY of the hate she received. She is entitled to feel how she wants about her own career. Glad she's doing better.
Cheetos Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 I’m glad she got the help she needed and is seemingly doing better. I wish her continued success! Crazy Rich Asians is a movie I’ve rewatched so many times at this point.
Poxy Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 I just saw this! I was shocked. It goes to show how much we really don’t know is going on behind the scenes… glad she is better
ATRL Moderator MissedTheTrain Posted July 15, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted July 15, 2022 That's awful, I hope she's doing better now. There's definitely a difference between holding people accountable for their mistakes/giving them a chance to learn and grow, and absolutely doing them in to that point.

In early April 2020, it was reported that the series, starring Chris Pratt, was in development, and seeking out a distributor.[6] In early May 2020, it was reported that Amazon Prime Video landed the series and Amazon Studios would be joining the series as production studio and the series was in the process of assembling a writers room.[7] Taylor Kitsch,[8] Constance Wu,[9] Jeanne Tripplehorn,[10] Riley Keough,[11] and Pratt's brother-in-law Patrick Schwarzenegger would join the cast in early 2021.[ Principal photography for The Terminal List began on March 9, 2021.

Even if she weren't Asian... Should actors only play roles in movies that are ethical or portray someone who is good? I finally watched that show, I hesitated because I dislike that actor. The movie is about an ex-SEAL carrying a personal vendetta because his friends and family died. Aren't those things that could happen in the US? How is that a movie that shouldn't be made? Genuinely asking.
Frozen99 Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 even if she felt stuck, she still signed a contract and should've obliged, i used to love fresh off the boat her comments were very nasty and disrespectful so i hope she learned from her mistakes regardless, she's a great actress and crazy rich asians is one of my all time fave movies i was so excited about the sequels but looks like it was put on a hold best of luck constance

Aren't those things that could happen in the US? How is that a movie that shouldn't be made? Genuinely asking. They're free to make whatever movie they want. They're not free from criticism, which more and more often doesn't affect audience scores or profits anyways because we're so culturally polarized. Some things in the film are plausible and some aren't, and it clearly has a target audience which is states with high military sign-ups (again, grateful for their service). Whether actors should only play good people is obviously not what I'm arguing at all - my feelings about it (I've also seen it by the way) are best described here: Daily Beast The Fresh Off the Boat controversy was sad because there were some points that weren't artfully made on her end on the sitcom encouraging stereotypes, which some (including AAPI film/TV critics) have argued means any barrier-breaking that came with it wasn't necessarily worth it.
