Why is there a lack of gay men in traditionally “masculine” jobs?

I know they say stereotypes aren’t real. But there really is a lack of gay men in certain jobs. Especially blue collar ones. Jobs like construction, firefighters, mining, maintenance, agriculture, or any other hard labor jobs.

Instead youll find a lot of gay men in pink collar jobs or traditionally female dominated roles like nursing, teaching, fashion, design, flight stewarding, administrative, etc.

I know these careers do tend to be very conservative, “bro like”, and skews right wing. But even gays who often call themselves masculine shy away from these careers.

Of course there’s gay men in manual labor jobs. But they’re rare. On the flip side, in service or pink collar jobs they are dime a dozen.

The one expectation is white collar which has everyone. The divide is the other two.

Maybe it's just not as visible due to the homophobic environment.

The problem starts in you thinking there's such a thing as "masculine" jobs

This honestly.

Labeling jobs as masculine or feminine will create divide for these jobs. Anyone should be able to do any job they love to do.

Let's get to work girlies and build these homes

I worked in a metallurgical factory last year and, although I liked the job (I like working hard with my body), the people were insufferable. Ignorance at its worst, jokes about gays, dicks, anal sex, all the time. On my first day, my boss jokingly "warned me" about a co-worker being "sort of femenine" and that I shouldn't get close to him if "I didn't want to be assaulted". Luckily I'm bisexual and I could still talk about girls with my co-workers, but I was so amazed... how could young guys in their early 20s be so ignorant and dumb?

I opened up about my sexuality to one of them who seemed to be educated and open-minded. He said he didn't mind, but told me keep it as a secret if I wanted to keep the job. It's not a safe place for LGBTs mostly, at least not now.

This is so dumb. Obviously the ideal would be jobs being genderless, but society has taught us that some jobs are for men and others for women, and it's still that way mostly. OP is just using stereotypical terms for us to understand their question.

I think some of these reasons may be true for some that they sought alternative work due to the nature of these jobs, but are ultimately drawing conclusions and trying to create connections that aren't there for the population. It just so happens that gay men have chosen a career path relevant to their interests, which doesn't include fighting fires, working in warehouses, in construction, etc. There are still gay men in these circuits.

Jokes aside, there is most definitely places in which different groups of people feel more comfortable. For example, a gay teen athlete may feel more comfortable in certain sports than in, let's say, rugby or something like that, where the environment is, at least in theory, let's say a bit harsher and less welcoming. However we're assuming that people fully know themselves before joining various fields and that's just not always the truth. I knew I wanted to go into engineering WAY before I even accepted I was a f**, and one of my high school friends didn't come out until after college for example. There's probably some causality involved for sure, but I think it's mostly just chance.

They exist. Not every gay, bi or trans person bases their whole existence around their sexuality or are feminine so therefore you won't know.

No need to downplay my opinion - we can agree to disagree.

Society should not be the standard. It is what it is right now but it shouldn’t always be the case.

Not in political sense, my bad :deadbanana2: conservative as in he wants a longterm monogamous relationship and a family one day, he is against open relationships and I LUV that about him  meeting him tonight, hopefully we have a connection. Imagine me being married to a construction worker who is also a Bruce Sprinsteen stan, into sports and knows how to cook? I think I found a jockpot keeper :jonnycat:

Most gays are subconsciously in survival mode and pursue education to stay in white collar to avoid dealing with homophobia in some of the jobs you mentioned, in my opinion. As a result, a lot of gay men are overachievers.
