Why is there a lack of gay men in traditionally “masculine” jobs?

We wanna do drugs and buy **** in big cities. No time for mining and agriculture :deadbanana2:

No but really, there's gay men everywhere. I've had a few firefighters and construction workers in my lifetime

There isn't. There just isn't as many open gays or gays who aren't stereotypically gay in those jobs so you don't realise.

construction, firefighters, mining, maintenance, agriculture

Well lets go through these:

Construction: notoriously homophobic
Firefighters:  About 5% of firefighters are LGBT which is not off significantly from the general workforce.
Mining: Generally rural areas which queer people tend to leave.  There are not really mines in the middle of urban areas.
Maintenance: This one is pretty interesting.  I think these jobs are heavily coded as masculine (different from how the gays might use that word) and thus there is a self selection bias away from being mechanics, repair persons, plumbers etc.
Agriculture: Same as mining.  (though I would not be surprised if there was a larger number of lesbian farmers up in like Vermont and Minnesota.)

gays prefer the comfort desk jobs... they are incapable of doing the field jobs.. besides field jobs have tons of homophobic men so thats the reason too

I guess it just depends on the type of gay.

I actually disagree with the statement. I see many gay men as in jobs considered "masculine " such as construction, firemen, police, garbage, etc...

MTE

What an ignorant post.

mining , agriculture , construction , utilities, energy, is all extremely interesting and brings a mixed bag of people on the spectrum.

I mean to be fair, manual labor jobs are just not appealing anymore and not just among gay people.

Why would you degrade your physical health doing some manual job, when most people can go for an office job for instance that requires less energy?

dismissive. a lot of office jobs (At least to make a decent living) require some sort of higher educational degree. not all of them, but most do. people working as plummers, maintenance, construction work etc dont typically have a high learning ability to develop advanced skills you need working as an engineer or in a law firm. which are typical 'relaxed' office jobs.

Because bisexual men do those jobs instead of gays

They are just more likely to be closeted. Honestly society is still a lot more homophobic than people want to admit.

Um yeah, that was exactly my point. :rip:

Most people nowadays wouldn't go for a manual labor job because they can have an easier acess to a higher educational degree and therefore study to achieve a comfort desk job. This isn't a rarity or a case exclusive to the gheys I fear.

Firstly, we don't know how many gay men actually do manual labour or blue collar jobs. It could very well be the case that many of them do, but due to the homophobic 'macho' environment they decide to stay in the closet. It is still not uncommon for gay men to marry women and have children with them in certain communities, usually more rural and working class.

Secondly, since cities are more friendly to the gays, they (at least those that are openly gay) tend to congregate there more, and it's not really an option to be a miner or an agriculture worker if you live in the city. It's much easier to get a job in the service industry or corporate.

Lastly, gay men don't really suffer from the same gender expectations as straight men do. Straight men are much more invested in maintaining their straight image, whereas openly gay men can just be who they want without fearing the gay accusations since they are already out. Even seemingly small and inconsequential things are still a big deal to straight men, like painting your nails for example. It's just really exhausting to be straight and some of these expectations spill into their careers and professional lives, where 'feminine' and low-earning professions are seen as incompatible with being 'a man'.

Because gay men are basically women

I’ve noticed a lot of them work at call centers. Even some porn models work as remote customer reps as another side hustle for extra pay.

sorry but this is so dumb :rip:

I am a civil engineer and know plenty of gays who work into construction. Maybe they just don't want to engage with you.

Lmaoo you just made this up?

There’s definitely gay men in these industries. They’re usually just masculine or straight passing (at least while at work). Even I worked construction for a bit before going to back to school. Just because they aren’t visible, does not mean that they aren’t there.

this is also more of a thing that has to do with their own interests. a lot of feminine gays and women don’t typically chose to do stuff thats seen as more masculine like idk studying engineering or physics. instinctly they have other preferences perhaps.

Because those places tend to be more homophobic? Why would you wanna be around people that actively hate you
