Dragonfly Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) (since the original thread was lost in the ATRLpurge) 3rd album by the English singer-songwriter out now! The new album serves as an unashamedly “rose-tinted” view of the north [of England] as a “Mary Poppins-esque universe”, explains Morris. It’s a concept echoed in the music, which is peppered with “orchestral Disney-esque woodwind stuff”. You can feel the yearning especially keenly on Running Shoes, a lush synthpop hymn to a pastoral idyll where animals graze and “the internet’s slow”. But Morris also misses less tangible things: the friendliness, the “practicality” and a feeling of normality she can’t seem to locate in London, where she lives with fellow musician and collaborator Benjamin Garrett (better known as Fryars). -X Edited July 9, 2022 by Dragonfly
Imaginary Friend Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 I fell asleep on the second song last night () but will give it a proper listen later. No Woman is an Island still sounds horrible to me but Go Dancing is absolutely stunning.
Cutthroat Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 I was obsessed with her during Unguarded but then slowly lost interest. I’ll have to give this a listen though as I also loved Someone Out There.
Scandalous Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 the singles had me scared but this is fantastic i was hoping she’d go more experimental for this album but i was expecting a more electronic direction like Rose Garden…she gave us experimental for sure, but i didn’t expect this campy quirky art pop Kate Bush esque vibe
Julia Fox Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 (edited) This album is so beautiful! I mean it’s her least catchy but at the same time it feels like her more authentic, personal and joyful album so far… you can tell she really enjoyed recording and making the album and also she’s very proud of it and so I am… the production and arrangements are so beautifully putted on every song… her voice sounds so sincere tho… Morning Isn’t Morning is my fave so far but also love Go Dancing, Running Shoes, Low Brow, The Carrot and In The Wild Edited July 8, 2022 by Julia Fox
Glassmouth Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 I think I need to give this album another shot, it's def unique... I was expecting something more like Someone Out There lol
Supervillain Posted July 8, 2022 Posted July 8, 2022 This album is so beautiful and dreamlike, I feel like listening to some fairytale
ATRL Moderator madonnas Posted July 8, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted July 8, 2022 I liked it but some of the lyrics definitely gave me 2013 tumblr. The last song was my favorite.
Dragonfly Posted July 9, 2022 Author Posted July 9, 2022 (edited) Making an album in the way that we did this one is a rare experience. I’m so grateful to the people that put trust in Fryars and I to fulfil our vision for it… [...] I also want to thank my Brother for the album title. If you hadn’t have encouraged my prolonged love of fairies and made that iconic msn messenger address ([email protected]), my imagination may not have become what it is. I hope that you all find something in the music! -X How cute Edited July 9, 2022 by Dragonfly
Polgg48 Posted July 9, 2022 Posted July 9, 2022 just missing theme/storyline and that's it, excellect output talents are displayed for her to be the big thing low brow wow wow wow wow
Edibles. Posted July 9, 2022 Posted July 9, 2022 Haven't heard her name in ages. Marina used to post about her 2018 quite often. Maybe I'll check this out at some point
pavi Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 (edited) Hmm, not really feeling this like I felt Someone Out There. Love the autotune on Go Dancing, tho, and A Table For Two feels like a cute companion to Dancing With Character. My favourite is In the Wild, it's so different for her! There are a few songs that could still grow on me, so I'll give it another try! Edited July 13, 2022 by pavi
Dragonfly Posted July 14, 2022 Author Posted July 14, 2022 I didn't expect her to top Someone Out There, one of my favourite 2018 albums. But this still is very solid. I love the blend of serious, relatable topics with the playful, dreamy production. A really cohesive record. favourites: No Woman, Spitting, Go Dancing, Skyscraper, Running Shoes, Table for Two () least favourite: The Carrot (one of those 'annoying' songs you can't help singing along to)
