Freakshowvato Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 NO unless you implicate it in a mean way. Currently, it's used as an insult. So you must EXPLICITLY put a positive spin on it.
loveisdead9582 Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 (edited) It kind of depends. Someone saying “I’d never date a fat person and I don’t want them around me” would be fatphobic. Pointing out that someone is overweight on its own is iffy at best but not necessarily fatphobic Edited July 6, 2022 by loveisdead9582
Sugar-Rush Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 No. Nobody is afraid of fat people, so "fatphobia" doesn't really exist.
zasderfght Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 (edited) Unless you're their doctor, why is it necessary for you to call someone fat? Not to mention, calling someone fat doesn't even make sense. Yes, they have excess body fat, if they are overweight and/or obese (or morbidly obese). But a person isn't just "fat." Look, you most likely have an average BMI. I do as well. Good for you. But let's not define people or seek to categorize people solely based on their weight. It's a really weird flex, and you have no idea what your future holds. You could gain lots of weight due to changes in your life, and I'm sure you wouldn't want someone judging you for losing too much weight or gaining too much weight. Get a better hobby. gatito Posted July 6, 2022 Posted July 6, 2022 this website is getting too far left for my taste lately OT: i think it’s none of your business what other people look like, get some manners it’s ducking rude
Bencharmer Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Well use the sentence you would use including the word fat and substitute it for the word gay. See how it sounds for you
AlanRickman1946 Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 For me positive feedback is way more effective. Someone told me to create a routine like waking up super early and exercising first thing in the morning to get it out of the way. Another told me I looked terrible and needed to lose weight. The first person spurred me on way more. On the other hand, that method won't work in the context of the OP in which it was suggested that he date a person he found to be too fat.

Gesamtkunstwerk Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 No, but it could easily be rude, but I guess you can think enough for yourself when it is or isn't

Fatphobia encompasses a multitude of negative attitudes around fat people or bigger people in general. This is like saying homophobes aren’t afraid of gays so homophobia doesn’t exist.
Slap Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 I see it like saying somebody is gay. If you say it like it’s a bad thing, or an insult, or when you know it could upset somebody because they don’t identify with the term or haven’t come to terms with it like Shawn Mendes then you probably shouldn’t.
Donquizote Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 No. If you mean good, there's nothing wrong with pointing out that your friend is fat and he needs to lose weight or else he's at risk of getting heart disease/diabetes I can't with politically correct climate we're currently living in

I personally avoid those words (esp directly to someone). Edited July 7, 2022 by harwee
Cain Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 That fully depends on the intent (and y’all know that too) Non offensive: “As a fat woman Lizzo is a beacon for the fat community” Offensive: “Lizzo is fat” when it has nothing to do with the topic at hand or is being used with a negative connotation

I feel like you don't need to say the word "fat" unless you're using it as a kind of insult. My mother always told me it was rude and you should say, "That person has a bad thyroid" or "that person speaks whale" but not to say the word fat.
