What makes "Say It Right" a great pop song?

The #1 Hot 100 hit is always hailed as one of the best pop songs of the 2000s especially on ATRL.

But what makes it a great pop song?

Is it the nonsensical lyrics?

The production?

The melody?

The vocals?

Discuss.

The melody is so universal, the vocal delivery & production out-of-this-world, the song production trendy for its time yet timeless at the same time, the video underlined the artsy timeless feeling and the lyrics are mysterious like you want to give them your own meaning. It’s just a great song.

70% the production 30% the melody

The production

It was so ethereal and ambient.  The lyrics made no damn sense though

the melody is so novel and F minor feels like such a unique key for a hit pop song tbh

in addition to that, the production is flawless and timeless, with every complexity in the right pocket. the lyrics have also never felt nonsensical  to me, they convey a sort of eerie perspective on a new relationship imo. the chorus is like her denying that they seem right but then she lets herself not be so doubtful for a second

another GENIUS element is that that perfect pop chorus only occurs twice, practically begging the listener to replay the song. all in all it’s just a coalescence of ethereal qualities which make it one of the greatest and most fascinating mainstream pop singles of all time :clap3:

Production, Nelly's vocals and the catchy chorus.

This is peak Timabaland (pre-Beyoncé) and peak Nelly tbh.

The production is what really makes the song. The melody and Nelly’s vocal delivery are also really strong too though, and the nonsensical lyrics work with the whole vibe.

The production is superb and the melody is enchanting.  This is one of my favorite songs of all time.  And it never disappoints.

The ambience, the cadence, the smoothness, the fact that it doesn’t need masterful lyrics and relies on an ethereal melody to carry it. There’s just an addicting quality that’s easy on the ears and makes you go back.
