Okayyy that was a decent premiere! I love the diversity of the cast and I love how shady everyone is!

Early faves are Ivory Glaze, Hollywould Star and Flor.

Hollywould is a literal STAR! Can't believe she's only been doing drag for a year. She looks so polished and confident.

Judging-wise, I would have swapped Amyl with Rita Menu in the bottom. But Amyl seemed so out of it from the start so I'm not really not sad with her exit.

It's rumored that this is the last season under contract with WBNZ and Season 4 could possibly be filmed in Australia on a bigger soundstage and moved to P+ but it's also possible they can stay in New Zealand but have a new contract for a bigger soundstage and stream on P+. Regardless, we will probably see big changes next season based on what I hear.

Regarding the future of the show...

Spoiler

They could do an All Stars season to celebrate the move to Paramount+. Art Simone, Etcetera Etcetera, Elektra Shock, Kween Kong, Yurii Guai, Minnie Cooper, Beverly Kills and a few girls this season would make a cute cast.

I haven't seen the first ep yet, but I'm so excited they cast FLOR :WAP: She was hilarious on House of Drag and I've been waiting for her to get on DRDU.

(Now let's hope she's not first out or I'll look like a clown for this post :clown:)

yeah the girls are very busted :deadbanana: rooting for Flor I guess

hmm this was a mess. the queens getting like two lines each made it almost impossible to judge, the runway was maybe half boots, that lipsync was worst of all time tier, amyl being forced into the bottom despite her hideous runway when rita was there, gabriella payola’d high when ivanna was better in the challenge and on the runway :rip:

excellent cast, majority of the contestants already giving great tv.

Mid drama going on right now about Art Simone's comments on Ivory Glaze. Thoughts?

"Why are you on Drag Race?"

Because the producers clearly liked her from her audition video? If anyone has to be on the receiving end of the "outrage", it has to be the producers.

Odd take because most of the girls have a day job to supplement their income from drag. Bosco was a barista, Darienne was (and is) a hairdresser, Bianca a costume designer etc.

While Ivory might not be the strongest queen, there have been plenty of good bedroom queens cast in past seasons. As Miss Fame said, not all queens aspire to be working in the club for the rest of their careers.

Why did this seem like it was filmed on an iPhone in someone’s bedroom? I don’t remember the other seasons feeling this low budget?

but the cast was at least all memorable…I guess bc there were only 10 queens. I like Amyl but she was a space cadet lol- not the bottom 2 being the 2 cutest boys lol

At least ivory’s day job can afford her some good drag looks unlike the rest of the cast

Not the promo tricking me into believing this season would actually be decent :skull:

At least we can laugh at another trainwreck, and I can drool over Rhys some more

Rooting for Flor, Hollywould and Ivanna so far

Ivory is so cute :smitten:

And a Guatemalan queen :duca:

Yeah giving them 5 seconds each in the song is a mess

Art dragging the producers would be like fish dragging water, considering what happened with her on Down Under S1.

Yeah this premiere was pretty underwhelming, Down Under stays looking so cheap despite being a Ru hosted season. The cast isn't really giving either compared to the first two seasons, a lot of young and inexperienced queens from what I can see. Is this really the best Down Under can offer, after just two seasons of the show?

Challenge was a mess, the time they gave each of them for their lines was ridiculous. Runway was an even bigger mess, the taste level just isn't there I fear. Hollywould won by default because she hit the mark both in the challenge and on the runway, but don't get me wrong she really deserved it. Other than her, Gabriella and Flor were the only one who stood out to me and I can see them go far. Gabriella is definitely my fave though, I really enjoy her sense of humor and quirky style.

Bottom 2 was correct and so was the elimination, but the lip sync as a whole was a mess as well. I can tell Ivory really wants it, but she might be a little too inexperienced for this.

Regarding Art Simone's comment, I can see where she's coming from but I don't necessarily agree. At this point you can't gatekeep drag (and Drag Race by extension).

Why does Down under feel so awkward? Is Ru even there or just photoshopped in?
France on the other hand looks so professional with a strong cast. The top 3 look like top 3 of the season already

Was forced to watch S3E1 of Down Under anf the whole franchise is so lifeless and unfunny. Longest hour of my life. Also so cheap!

I’m so confused. I got bored of s1 a few episodes in and didn’t watch s2 but have given this one a go…so why is ru not filming with the girls in the work room? That was the weirdest thing, did they do that last year and Green screen her in?

Even on the runway it seemed like there was little evidence of her being in the same room as the girls.

I could see Gabriella, Flor, and Hollywould doing well this season. Isis and Anita were likeable so I hope they stick around. Overall though this group feels a little underwhelming. Is the DU drag scene as a whole like this? Or are they just choosing cheap queens?

I don’t know that I see her going very far but Ashley’s boy persona is doing it for me.

A bit of both. Australian drag has never really been known for being 'polished' or fashion forward. I think things are starting to change now with all the younger queens coming through thanks to the influence of Drag Race, rise in Queer fashion houses etc. However Australian (not sure about New Zealand but I imagine its similar) drag first and foremost is meant to be silly and camp and shocking, which I don't think necessarily translates super well to the 'traditional' drag race format.

You can tell this year they're really emphasising the younger fashion forward queens, but in doing so I think a lot of the queens on this season, even the current front-runners as amazing and talented as they are, are still quite new and fresh, which means they're likely still finding themselves both as a drag queen and as a performer. I think thats probably why some of the personalities are coming across a little bit contrived and forced.

The thing that still urks me about DRDU is that you can tell the production team are predominately straight (its being produced by Australian streaming giant Stan), and/or American. I dont think in the last 30 years you would catch a drag queen in Australia singing Men at Work :rip: at the club. I kow Ru's husband is Australian so she does understand the culture and humour a bit more, but the show would really benefit from a local talent hosting the show instead (*cough* Courtney *cough*).

Hopefully if we make it to season four we see the following changes:

  • Ru and Michelle stepping down as the main host judge with the reigns being handed over to Courtney (or even Spanky or Kita at this point)
  • They replace that bootleg Ross Mathews, Rhys with an AU/NZ queer person who actually has charisma and understands drag and queer culture and not just putting on an ugly purple suit and bow tie
  • Move the production studio to Australia so we can actually have a set and main stage that resembles the other franchises and doesnt look like it was put together with a $10 gift card at Hot Dollar
  • Have a good mix of older campy queens and younger more fashion-forward queens

I feel like if they attained all that Drag Race Down Under could really be something special.

Lastly, shout out to my girl Amyl, while her performance in the episode was elimination worthy she is such a sweet, funny, quirky queen and I'm sad the world won't get to see what more she has to offer.

No way, there are some extremely polished, funny and talented queens sitting on the sidelines waiting for the world to love them

Sorry for triple post. I tried to combined them but it wouldnt work but OT:

Art Simone continues to be an old, bitter, self-righteous white gay. You can have other passions and interests and still be passionate about drag? Also not her dragging someone for having well-paying full time job in one of the worst economic periods of the last 100 years. Girl why don't you go get sent home by Coco Jumbo again and shut up.

Feel sorry for Amyl because the whole episode centered around ivory's meltdown and I thought that meant she was gonna go home but then Amyl did. I guess maybe she didn't give the producers much or something? She was the worst in the challenge and lost the lip sync but i would have liked to have seen more.

The cast all seem fun though much less seasoned than previous casts.

Also Art Symone made no points. Not every queen can survive off drag alone, that doesn't mean they shouldn't take an opportunity to raise their profile. Didn't Ivory Glaze even say she doesn't get many bookings?
