FACT SHEET: President Biden to Sign Historic Executive Order Advancing LGBTQI+ Equality During Pride Month

Today, to mark Pride Month, President Biden will sign an Executive Order Advancing Equality for LGBTQI+ Individuals, and he will welcome LGBTQI+ families, advocates, elected officials, and leaders to the White House for a reception.

President Biden’s Executive Order builds on the historic progress he has made for LGBTQI+ people by:

Addressing discriminatory legislative attacks against LGBTQI+ children and families, directing key agencies to protect families and children;

Preventing so-called “conversion therapy” with a historic initiative to protect children from the harmful practice;

Safeguarding health care, and programs designed to prevent youth suicide;

Supporting LGBTQI+ children and families by launching a new initiative to protect foster youth, prevent homelessness, and improve access to federal programs; and

Taking new, additional steps to advance LGBTQI+ equality

And here's a video of Jill and Joe Biden talking about Pride and LGBTQ+ rights at the White House moments ago. It's cute how they lit up the hallway in rainbow lights. You can see him signing the executive order towards the end of this video. @ 23:30 minutes.

Contact your representatives and tell them to pass the Equality Act that’s been lounging around in the senate for the last 18 months :cm:

Europeans and their desperation to be the center of attention, when a quick google search is enough to prove them wrong :rip: your ancestors were probably colonials as well

Yes, because places like California and New York are so backwards in terms of LGBT compared to Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands and Bulgaria, Serbia and Ukraine are so advanced in terms of LGBT rights compared with Alabama, Georgia and Wyoming

I was told on ATRL that Joe Biden takes the LGBT community for granted and wasn’t going to do anything to help the community as it’s under attack, so this is shocking for me! :eek:

No, even a broken clock gets it right twice a day.

The fact that it took this long and that he's conveniently ignoring other factors he could use executive orders on (weed, loans, etc) ...

Actually many countries in Europe like Sweden and Norway are going the opposite way and establishing limits on the possibility of children being subjected to irreversible interventions like hormonal treatment, sterilization and genital mutilation (which is what the euphemism "affirming" means) :mandown:

Not to mention that upon a glance at the linked page, it’s all “the executive order charges HHS with safeguarding this, starting a study on that, making a working group on the other thing” - like yeah, it’s good that it’s being thought about at all, but this doesn’t alleviate my worry that the few actual legal and legislative protections we have are going to be significantly eroded or entirely removed in the near future. It doesn’t make this country safer for us, or protect existing rights from being attacked by Republicans, or expand those rights in any way. It’s disappointing that this is all we can count on getting. :katie:

The issue with liberalism is found in much of what he decides to do and, most importantly, what not to do.

Discriminatory Legislation:
- Directing the HHS and DOE to release "sample policies" regarding LGBT patients and students ends up becoming word salad if the sample policies never move beyond being just "recommendations" for states. This is insignificant unless he would use both departments and the powers of authority inherent to them to crackdown on states breaking federal law and guidance, which he hasn't done thus far across the boad.

Addressing Conversion Therapy
- "Encouraging" the FTC to considering implementing warnings that conversion therapy a form of fraud is toothless; many states already ban it on the legal grounds that it's akin to selling snake oil. It's inherently fraudulent. They already have the means to outlaw it and Biden the means to direct the FTC to follow suit.
- The actual substantial bit is having the HHS "clarify" federally-funded healthcare programs cannot offer conversion therapy. That is indeed very good and concrete.

Supporting LGBTQI Children and Family
- Encouraging HHS to develop initiatives aimed specifically in tracking the outcomes of LGBTQI youth in the foster case system.
- Directing the HHS to develop programs to ensure increased access to free voluntary counseling programs for LGBTQI families.
- Asks the CDC to to do a study on the impact of family abandonment on LGBTQI youth
- Asks the HHS and OMB to develop a program that can study and try to assess where to improve access to federal programs (housing, etc.) for LGBTQI families

The rest of the list largely follows in terms of everything being a ~recommendation for a ~study for an ~initiative to determine ~pathways for future ~policies.. The issue is him writing the memo to "encourage" federal offices to implement such policies versus if they will then actually follow along and directly go after offenders on the state-level; (something that could have been written in via more concrete language) and if they refuse, if he's willing to fire people and replace them to suit his agenda in the way Republicans do.

We saw this with him filing executive actions encouraging the DoE to ~find pathways~ to help increase access for forgiveness programs to disabled students, but then his Justice Department tried blocking a judge who granted a permanently disabled man total forgiveness of his six-figure student debt:

https://www.levernews.com/biden-moves-to-block-student-debt-victory/

:toofunny3:

"But-but that was a TRUMP-appointed staffer!" - Okay... so fire him, like you have the inherent power to do? And which Republicans would do in a second?? :skull: Why are there ANY Trump-appointed staffers in any federal office under a Democratic president right now?? How can you even trust any of these guidances will be implemented if each federal office didn't clear out post-Trump? It's like.. the ******* stupidity of this ~bipartisanship~ dream he has.

That’s all going to be up to Congress. Anything Biden does would be temporary. It would be shot down with the next presidency. Given what a mess the midterms are, Biden is going to have all sorts of headaches getting anything through without temporary executive orders. The GOP will move to impeach him the minute they take office and have a majority next year. It’s going to be a non-stop sideshow.
