There is a difference between joking on a forum that someone is gay, outright insisting they are, actually @'ing said person on social media, being a verified writer for a newspaper with legal standards that may speculate on their own personal social media account on someone else being gay, and then speculating literally in an official capacity for the "paper of record" in Australia prior to release solely because it was newsworthy (and from a gay writer no less) of a celebrity that never advocated as a politician or in any other capacity against gay causes (or for any other political issue period at least strongly). Numerous other newspapers in Australia alone actually called out the writer and the paper in question.

There's a difference between one poster joking about Shawn Mendes on ATRL, a group of posters on ATRL demanding he come out, a group of people on Twitter actually directly attacking him to his account (or other social media platforms) as closeted, and the official writer in a official capacity for a paper upset they couldn't conduct an official outing.

Please don't gaslight people into insisting there isn't any difference in degree to what I just listed.

If you think it’s joke anywhere then you still don’t get it

Does anybody remember that guy from Survivor who outed a contestant on set? I believe he lost his job and ended up in therapy.

I wonder how the writer and editors of this article, who have claimed to have done nothing wrong, are feeling at the moment. I'm guessing they're feeling smug and like they got away with it. Unfortunately, it looks like they are going to.
