Robert Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Quote Elon Musk, chief executive officer of Tesla weighed in on the return-to-office debate Wednesday on Twitter by elaborating on an email he apparently sent to the electric-car maker’s executive staff. Under the subject line “Remote work is no longer acceptble” [sic], Musk wrote that “anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla.” He went on to write that the office “must be a main Tesla office, not a remote branch office unrelated to the job duties, for example being responsible for Fremont factory human relations, but having your office be in another state.” It’s not the first time Musk’s tough-love treatment of his employees has come up. Roughly two weeks before Musk prevailed in his attempt to strike a deal to buy Twitter, the Silicon Valley venture capitalist and entrepreneur Keith Rabois tweeted a story from Musk’s start-up days. Once, at Space Exploration Technologies, Musk had noticed a group of interns milling around while they waited in a line for coffee. To Musk, it was an affront to productivity. According to Rabois, who knows Musk from their days at PayPal Holdings, Musk responded by threatening to fire all the interns if it happened again, and had security cameras installed so that the company could monitor compliance. Source A literal sociopath
FOCK Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 (edited) I work for a tech company and this was all our recruitment team was discussing today. Fortunately, we’ve adopted a permanent flexible working stance (I’m in Aus). The gag is, if you go on the Atlassian recruitment page, they have a banner specifically welcoming Tesla workers to apply. Most of the largest tech companies are scaling down at the moment. Not that it’s any consolation, but I believe Tesla has provided a data base to tech recruiters, listing the experience & skills of the people they’re laying off & encouraging other companies to hire them, essentially, providing a professional referral. This will ultimately harm Tesla, as top talent in this field are seeking flexible/remote work opportunities as one of their key asks, & it’s a highly competitive market. They’re going to bleed talent. It’s quite regressive and moreso an excuse to not have to pay out redundancy for hitting their scale down target of 10%. Edited June 7, 2022 by FOCK
slayships Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 in 2022 after covid the idea of commuting, getting stuck in peak hour traffic etc seems so outdated. I recently started working from home and I love it. In fact at the moment I am working from home as a type this

I’d say I’m surprised that a leading tech company is taking this stance, but really, it’s just a tactic to get people to leave voluntarily, under the guise of “productivity”. mystery Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 (edited) Elon is a vile person which is something that has been known for some time. Working from the office is mostly unnecessary and a complete pain in the ass most of the time. Edited June 7, 2022 by mystery

SpaceMan Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Tesla already knew for their horrible working condition, people just work there for some years to make their CV nicer and move to somewhere else
The7thStranger Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 American work culture is unhealthy and spiraling toward the Chinese standard.

Bimbo Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 How is he so obsessed with the future but has these stuck in the past views
fountain Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 It’s all about control ultimately. They want as much power over you as possible and they can’t get that from the comfort of your own home. The culture of labour is so ****** up.

sugarysunflower Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 As Samantha Jones would say: "....it's amazing. a man with such innovative vision can be so short-sighted."

A lot of those hours were “voluntary” and therefore not billable.

DemiRexha Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Well of course a car maker is gonna want people to commute lol
RunUpDoneUp Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Does he not realize the amount of unions that started in offices? It's coming and there's no horse he can buy to stop it.
Vrx. Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 He's legit just trying to avoid paying COBRA benefits and severing unemployment benefits overall. Tesla's mass hiring and acceptance of pandemic cash let them expand but now that things are going back to pre-COVID levels he doesn't have the desire to shell out so much capital with layoffs. Why pay people to leave when you can force them out for $0?
IBeMe Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 tbh it is ALL about control and a power trip. We worked fine through this entire pandemic and then starting October our boss told us to be back in the office 5 days a week and I am SO over it already. Like they initially said we would do 3 days in the office and 2 days at home but they scrapped it saying it was too "complicated". I'm seriously considering going and doing my Masters in Psychotherapy instead of working like this. It will give me a break for a good 2 years and then once I graduate I can literally work a SUPER flexible schedule as a Psychotherapist and make good money too. I feel BURNED OUT ever since graduating and working full time but at least working from home made things super easy and sort of enjoyable but once the work at home mandate ended I swear it has become intolerable. The commute is horrible and I feel like I am regressing not progressing. It's time for a change.
