Ray Charles whitesplains to interviewer why Elvis wasn’t that good

Elvis was influenced by blues and black music, as well as country, it's unfortunate that at the time black artists were mainly restrained from mainstream media and didn't get to express their art, but Elvis did what he had to do, he had a majestic voice, great dance moves and the charisma and looks that really resonated with the time.

Elvis's rock and roll songs are kinda forgotten anyway

He's mostly remembered for his image, deep voice, charisma and his love ballads like Always On My Mind and Can't Help Falling In Love

The look being white. Which was Ray's point - there were Black artists doing the same thing but far better.

he sounds mad :toofunny3: it's not elvis's fault that black people faced systemic racism back then. what was he supposed to do, not have a career? :toofunny3:

What are you talking about? He didn't sound mad at all. He was smiling and laughing the entire time.

And not "back then" :toofunny3:

He’s not saying he shouldn’t have existed, he’s just saying he wasn’t that special.

Different perspectives, I guess, but I did not see a rant. He never yelled or sounded mad - quite the opposite as he was laughing and smiling. He was stating facts.

I'm not saying they didn't. I was just expounding on what Ray said.

He was asked why he wasn’t impressed with Elvis, not if Elvis was at fault for anything.

I mean where is the lie?

He was no Sinatra who could at least sing very well.

How was Elvis "not that good"? He was a great performer and one of the best selling artists of all time. Clearly he had some talent otherwise he wouldn't have gotten as big as he did. Ray sounds pressed. :celestial5:

Elvis was a much more versatile singer than Sinatra who sounded the same on his songs.

he didn’t lie. it’s not like he said Elvis is bad or untalented.

I'm not a fan either but he remains the father of modern pop music as we know it, with controversy, stan culture and all.

Anyway, can someone name a mainstream pop artist who actually invented a music genre or that didn't ApProPrIaTe an already existing sound or style?
