uusagii Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 (edited) I honestly thought they'd eat this up And IIRC Pitchfork's staff writers don't actually have a say in album scores, BNT/BNM designations, or even press - they're given a brief outline tailored by higher ups and write around that. So, for them to go this low and bash her, something definitely happened bts Edited May 29, 2022 by uusagii
Archetype Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 This is getting weird. Something definitely happened bts because they rarely ever speak about artists this way and they’ve always had a good relationship with Sky.
Vermillion Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 Pitchfork turns on its idols just as quickly nowadays and isn't as beholden or creating excuses for the people they originally propped up in the 2000s and early 2010s. When their ultimate manic pixie dream girl Grimes gets a 4.0 for just the title of her upcoming EP alone, don't say I didn't warn you. Pitchfork's given tons of exclusive and/or first interviews only for them to trash the album or singles themselves so that reasoning from the OP also doesn't hold water. Also their writers and editors aren't a monolith (and I'm not defending them either but their politics are really transparent) and their splits continue to be weird with the writer that does the review but can't give the score which they leave to the editor. It's why solid reviews end up with 6's or 7's that make no sense. Also just want to pre-empt any Halsey stans that may want to create narratives out of this that don't exist - please breathe, get outside and touch some grass. I don't stan for either.
Sugar-Rush Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 Aren't they notorious for dragging every female singer that isn't Lana?

P4K has been hardcore stanning Sky ever since Everything is Embarrassing. They even gave her random interviews and features throughout the years and praised the music she shared with them. This is like a complete 180 and it’s probably related to how she didn’t give them an exclusive interview this time around (she spoke to Vogue and Vulture).

That's quite the accusation that isn't supported by the evidence I mentioned earlier of exclusives being granted to artists whose work they trashed later - because again, the entire staff isn't a monolith, and there's a big split between the editors and the writers themselves. I'd respect anyone that actually holds this opinion if they actually @'d Pitchfork's editor, Puja Patel, with the accusation. She's been known to be willing to get into dust-ups before to defend herself, or the organization. Otherwise it's hot air.

Kayseri Mantisi Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 (edited) On their Potion review, they literally praised the song for sounding like it's something from Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1, praising Calvin for using the “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” formula. But this same reason is literally why they're dragging Sky. In Potion review it is “Formulaic or not, it’s hard to argue when the results feel good” but for Don't Forget suddenly it is “sounding like an another song from Night Time, she made her bland return without taking any risks.” So inconsistent and weird, it's almost giving misogyny at this point if you compare it to the Potion review. If they're the “most trusted voice in the music” as they say, their writers shouldn't be this much conflict with each other. Edited May 29, 2022 by Kayseri Mantisi

I'm sorry, but this is one of the dumbest things I've ever read on this site, which is saying something. The fact that editors are letting such divergent reviews out shows if anything they're not trying to move the publication in lockstep in blind defense of an artist out of pride or the fact that they were granted exclusives in the first place.
GotMyBlueprint Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 poor sky isn't just skulldragged, at this point she's basically been decapitated... Halsey stans always win, it seems
