20 years later, what do we remember most about Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill | EW.com

Alanis Nadine Morissette is a Canadian-American singer, songwriter, and actress.

Known for her emotive mezzo-soprano voice and confessional songwriting, Morissette began her career in Canada in the early 1990s with two highly successful dance-pop albums. Afterward, as part of a recording deal, she moved to Holmby Hills, Los Angeles. In 1995, she released Jagged Little Pill, an alt rock-oriented album with the elements of post-grunge, which sold more than 33 million copies globally and is her most critically acclaimed work to date.

This earned her the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1996 and was made into a rock musical of the same name in 2017, which earned 15 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. The album was also listed in the 2003 and 2020 editions of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time Guide. Her highly anticipated, more experimental follow-up, electronic-infused album Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, was released in 1998.

Morissette assumed creative control and producing duties for her subsequent studio albums, including Under Rug Swept (2002), So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), and Havoc and Bright Lights (2012). Her latest album, Such Pretty Forks in the Road, was released in 2020. Her well-known singles "You Oughta Know", "Hand in My Pocket", "Ironic", "You Learn", "Head Over Feet", "Uninvited", "Thank U" and "Hands Clean" reached top 40 in the major charts around the world, including 10 top-40 hits in the UK, 3 top-10 in the US and Australia and 12 top-10 hits in her native Canada. She also holds the record of the most No. 1s on the weekly Billboard Alternative Songs chart among any female soloist, group leader or duo member. Morissette won 7 Grammy Awards, 14 Juno Awards, 1 Brit Award and has sold more than 75 million records worldwide and has been dubbed the "Queen of Alt-Rock Angst" by Rolling Stone.

This was actually the album that made me a fan of hers and got me to delve into her discography. I love it so much.

I'm not jealous
I don't get moved by much
I'm not enraged

Not insecure as such
Not going insane
Rational stays in touch
Doth I protest too much

when did you discover this album sis?

I discovered this album like one or two months ago skskksksks :deadbanana:

I have been getting into her discography ever since I gave Under Rug Swept a chance because I was curious how her album would sound like compared with other 2002 albums that I grew up listening to (such as Let Go)

I’m so sorry girlie I’m so swamped with work I couldn’t do an OP justice but please know I’ll be present and any questions on our queen I’m probably going to have useless trivia on

Lemme start with an outrageous hot take. Everyone hates On The Tequila but I think it’s quintessential Alanis and a rare example of her having fun on her music with the production as well as the lyrics. She always poked fun but people hated it for the lyrics. The older I get the more I think it’s a gorgeous cute song. It also inspired me to try tequila when I was 16 though so maybe it’s irresponsible. Anyway love u Alanis and little Morissetties

Her best 00s song but you’re all gonna h8 me

Flavours of Entanglement > Under Rug Swept > So-Called Chaos

I love title track (stan getting naked in the street, that’s very me), Spineless, Everything and Doth but I don’t think it holds up to the other two. It’s still a slept on gem. One episode of How I Met Your Mother Marshall is wearing a t shirt with the album cover on. Taste :clap3:

In 2004! My dad (who also introduced me to Avril) got me into her music. I had heard Ironic etc before but I didn’t really know much about her as an artist. But when my dad saw how much I loved Under My Skin, he showed me some songs from So-Called Chaos and I loved them. We used to go on drives a lot and listen to music and that’s when he started to show me material from Jagged Little Pill and my child heart couldn’t handle the anthem known as You Learn. :WAP:

On the Tequila is one of my favourite songs from FOE and I’ve never understood the hate. It’s such a fun / catchy song. :jamming:

I love how that song is called Hands Clean even though she murdered the entire music industry when she released it.

Unfortunately I do think until her more recent releases (like pre 2012) people were just super pretentious where she’s concerned and act like (as amazing as she is) it was somehow beneath her to release such a fun song. On the contrary I think her discog is better off for it. And it’s only a bonus track anyway. Glad to see someone else stans TALENT!

Tapes honestly breaks me. The way that album is about Ryan Reynolds is such a kiiii but it was really relatable for a period of time when I was younger

I’m sorry but can we talk about how flawless this song is?

Definitely my favourite off the new album. I always get chills down my spine when she sings “my mission is not dead yet” :chick3:

I was actually going to mention myself that a lot of the hate seemed pretentious. I’ve just always found the song to be such an ear-worm and that hasn’t changed all these years later.
