Nefertiti0 Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 A Spanish court has dismissed an appeal from Colombian singer Shakira and ratified a prior decision, which saw "sufficient evidence" to send her to stand trial over alleged tax fraud. The new decision is a ratification of a prior court ruling issued in July 2021. The court still has to formally send her to stand trial and set a date. https://www.reuters.com/world/shakira-loses-appeal-avoid-trial-spanish-tax-fraud-case-2022-05-26/
GwennyGwenGwen Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 This trial is honestly so confusing to me Every few months she is either going to jail or getting exonerated
sugarysunflower Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 I see both sides of the coin, but it feels like it’s becoming harassment at this point. How much evidence and trials do the Spanish need or put in place to get convicted or acquitted ?? Do they do this to all foreigners / high net worth individuals in Spain (with dodgy tax history ?)
EtherealCat Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 so this is why she was at cannes, shes on the run

There's plenty of international or nationals that evade taxes all the time, most pay what they should have and pay the fine because there's no point in denying the obvious. They basically say "hey well, we got caught". In Shakira's case I think it has to do with the fact that she's still insisting she never broke any law (even though there's like plenty of proof proving she was in fact living in BCN, heck they even have her on tape saying so ). She's already paid, I don't know why she keeps insisting, just pay the fine and move on. At this point she's spending more in lawyers than on the fine Edited May 26, 2022 by Cloudy
Bloodflowers. Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 That explains why her last single is so good, she needs a smash hit to escape prison!
Pikachoo Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 wait, is she still scheduled to be executed in Saudi Arabia? What's the update on that
Cloudy Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 I hope she serves an iconic gif when she attends the trial

This is my thought too at this point? I am far from an expert on Spanish tax law but this feels like harassment at this point. this seems like a disagreement in how the law is interpreted regarding the question of “residency”. At least in the US you can normally challenge this without the government threatening to send you to jail. If you fail to win your case, then you pay the tax and move on with life. KillingYourCareer Posted May 26, 2022 Posted May 26, 2022 Good. She shouldn't get away with it just because she's a celebrity. If she has to end up in jail like every normal person would, so be it.
