people always end up finding out america is probably the one nation that 'unlearned' its anti-blackness the most regardless of its history once they visit other places (europe sans the big western cities, the middle east...etc)

all of Europe is severely racist :monkey:

This. This continent is the birthplace of racism. Just cuz they give their citizens free healthcare by taxing corporations robbing workers with slave labor in the global south, following centuries of colonization and brutal genocide, doesn’t mean the mayonnaise is any less rotten.

Switzerland is an isolated country that does not have an history of coming in contact with a lot of other cultures. It’s inhabited by the whitest people possible if that’s even a thing. Makes total sense she doesn’t feel comfortable there. White people who are uncultured act like theyre in a zoo when they see a black person walking down the street, it’s disgusting

Yes but isn't the UK racist too tho? like... the world is racist no matter what people say...

It is, but when you have major cities like London and Manchester that are heavily mixed, with large black populations, those issues are not felt as much.

But it would be experienced if you went to predominantly white areas like Plymouth for example where the micro aggressions become more apparent again because you are the obvious minority.

I feel bad for her but why in the world would she go to Switzerland. It’s in the middle of nowhere for a reason sis  :dies:

They kinda look down on anyone who isn't Swiss there :rip:

swiss people are unwelcoming to everyone who isn‘t swiss even if you speak their language, their swiss exceptionalism is always giving me uk vibes.

I totally believe her experience & the race element in it - but I'll just add that Switzerland is an extremely isolationist/closed off country in general.

All foreigners can feel like they're getting the cold shoulder, especially non-Europeans. I've never felt more judged in my life than I did trying to communicate with Swiss people when I travelled there, they deserved the reputation that France has :skull:

It goes beyond that. In the Italian part they use their own words to describe most things. In the German part, they officially speak German, but it's in fact a variant of it that's barely intelligible to Germans. Don't know about the French part, but yeah, they want exclusivity :dies:

Precisely. I mean they are obviously pressed that many Germans/French/Italian people love to work there but to live and buy stuff outside of Switzerland where its just so much cheaper :fan:

I always got the impression that France and the French speaking Swiss part get along pretty well, probably because they're so mutually intelligible, but the Swiss people I know all say Switzerland have a pretty elitist culture because they're really rich, not part of the EU and doesn't really like outsiders :cm:

So true :deadbanana4: I'm an Afro-Belgian and their French isn't that different from ours but I felt extremely condescended when trying to speak it to the locals in Lausanne. I had to opt for English instead (which is my native, but you'd think they'd appreciate any effort to communicate in their language). The Swiss are very cold with foreigners or expats, regardless of what language they speak. Internal xenophobia is rampant as well. I think it's encouraged by their Alpine culture and way of living. It's not uncommon to find cases like these in Austria as well.

But ATRL told me that only Americans can be racist and that Europe is a paradise of racial equality. :psyduck:

That has never been said in here but please quote someone saying that...

Maybe she’s in the rural part. I live here now and while there are many things I’d criticise Switzerland for, weird looks from strangers is not one of them. Not gonna dismiss her experience though. I will say, the Swiss kinda keep to themselves and do their own thing. Thank God for a thriving expat community. Woulda been depressing living here otherwise.
