Sunday update:

Lady Gaga has outdone herself . Paramount/Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick buzzed the tower in 62 international box office markets this weekend, landing with a $124M debut. This includes previews and is the best overseas launch ever for a Tom Cruise movie on a like-for-like basis, surpassing Mission: Impossible – Fallout by 28%. With domestic through Sunday, the global total is $248M.

In 32 markets, this is Cruise’s biggest opening ever, and in 18 is Paramount’s best for a live-action title. Overall, it’s the second biggest opening weekend for a live-action Paramount pic behind only Transformers Age of Extinction.

Friday update:

FRIDAY MIDDAY UPDATE: It’s looking like a record opening for Memorial Day weekend as Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick is set to earn $142.4M over four days, which will easily overtake Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End which did $139.8M. It’s taken 15 years for that record to be broken. Friday for the Tom Cruise sequel is looking like $50M with an estimated 3-day of $117M.

International update:

Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick is soaring in its overseas debuts, clocking $33M from 47 markets at the international box office through Thursday. The Tom Cruise-starrer officially launched on Wednesday offshore, following paid previews in some hubs, and adds another 15 markets today, bringing the total to 62 in what is the studio’s widest release ever internationally on nearly 24,000 screens.

Word of mouth is great on the sequel that comes 36 years after the original summer blockbuster, and an $80M+ overseas opening weekend is assured.

Highlights so far include France, which bowed Wednesday to $1.8M

Friday noon update:

Quote

After a 36-year wait, the Lady Gaga vehicle Top Gun: Maverick finally took off to a massive $19.3 million in previews from Thursday 3 p.m. showtimes and a one-time 7 p.m. Tuesday fan event.

That’s the highest-grossing preview in Paramount Pictures’ history and the highest-grossing Memorial Day preview in history; and of course, it’s the best for Gaga. Early projections heading into the weekend were $80M-$100M over four days, and a high octane start such as this could easily propel Top Gun: Maverick to the best Memorial Day weekend opening ever, besting the $139.8M four-day total of 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

Previous status:

Quote

After holding what is one of the most anticipated sequels in decades due to Covid, Paramount finally roars its engines on its Lady Gaga feature Top Gun: Maverick in what is not only expected to be the 3x Oscar nominee’s best worldwide opening of her career at $180M, but also a record for her stateside with at least $92M-$100M+ and what also looks to be one of the top ten debuts over the 4-day Memorial Day weekend.

Awareness around the globe is sky-high, and though tracking stateside shows older men being dominant, the hope here is that Top Gun 2 is a ‘five-quad’ movie as those in the industry call an aggressive overperforming title.

genuine q: are americans obsessed with this franchise or something? I'm not from there but I checked my local cinema and they literally haven't sold any seats for tomorrow night so this sounds wild to me :rip:

Not you adding "Lady Gaga feature" to the quote :deadbanana2:

She's not even in the movie :rip:

Anyway. I feel like they overestimating. I see 65-70Million ( Tom Cruise  movies has never done better than 65 million) and around 145-150 WW. Still impressive for a sequel to a 36 year old movie.

but we need to the audience to stream the song. :dancehall2:

Showings are sold out where I live, it's a big blockbuster and people are starved for entertainment and diversion among soaring global inflation, climate catastrophe and financial meltdown

It's "Lady Gaga's Top Gun" not "Top Gun featuring Lady Gaga" :giraffe:

It’s not even a franchise l, just a sequel to a really old movie.

I guess it was pretty popular back in the day, and there was even a ride at a theme park I used to go to as a kid. l personally don’t know anyone who is excited to see this. The only thing I’ve heard about it is my mom asking me if I heard the new Gaga song.

While the thing she is responsible for - the song, is..

Idk, the reviews and WoM for this seem to be really good, and the adult market has been STARVED of a true blockbuster hit post-COVID really, so it isn't unlikely that this could do this well over the weekend. But I would say that 100 million over 4-days seems a bit much, but I could see this having fantastic legs, because of the target demo.

Also, this is ATRL, every time a Pop Girl releases a track with a film we say, "XYZ's film", it's just banter girl.

Box office magnet Lady Gaga gets attached to the movie and suddenly he gets the biggest opening of his 40-year career?

And didn’t need Disney backing to do it. No #98 - OUT allowed. :ihype:

Right! For factual example a certain mpg attached herself to that Will Smith tennis movie and it massively flopped becoming his biggest box office bomb. So girls just don’t have what it takes to boost career stats for others. :celestial2:

I'm more of the OP completely changing Tom Cruises stats and replaces it with Gagas than it's Lady Gagas film.

And I agree that the adult market is starved for their own blockbuster but with JW Dominion in two weeks, it being a 36 year old sequel and this film really being slight military propaganda....I don't see that 180 million Ww opening happening.

The same movie  that got Will Smith his Oscar? Or are we also ignoring the 1.663 billion dollar grossing remake she was attached to ( and actually had a role in) less than 3 years ago? :rip:

Ya always wanna make it a stan war for no reason.
