The bassist and vocalist spoke about his diagnosis in a statement, while announcing both his debut solo album and new single ‘Hideous’

Oliver Sim, vocalist and bass guitarist of The xx, has revealed that he has been living with HIV since he was 17.

Sim spoke candidly about his diagnosis in a statement shared alongside his new solo song “Hideous”, the first single from his forthcoming debut solo album, Hideous Bastard. Produced by Jamie xx, Hideous Bastard draws inspiration from Sim’s own life experiences.

“Early on in the making of my record, Hideous Bastard, I realised that I was writing a lot about fear and shame. I imagine that might paint a picture of a dark, “woe is me” sounding album, but in recent years I’ve become a firm believer that the best antidote to these feelings can be bringing them to the surface and shedding some light on them,” Sim said in the statement.

“I realised I’d been circling around one of the things that has probably caused me the most fear and shame. My HIV status. I’ve been living with HIV since I was 17 and it’s played with how I’ve felt towards myself, and how I’ve assumed others have felt towards me, from that age and into my adult life,” Sim said. “So, quite impulsively, I wrote about it on a song called ‘Hideous’.”

‘Hideous’ features Jimmy Somerville, who Sim describes as a “guardian angel” and praised for being a “powerful voice around HIV and AIDS for decades”.

This would be based on whatever manual of style they are bound to use.

OT: Very brave of him. :clap3:

Not fully on topic but didn't Romy only release like one solo song?

OT: I'm happy for him that he feels comfortable enough to share his story with the world. I think it's also important to see queer HIV positive people still achieving success, and showing that the diagnosis isn't a death sentence esp with today's medicine.

There's special place in hell for gays who sleep with minors and even worse for the bastards who ruin their lives from such a young age when they didn't know any better by giving them STI, especially HIV that stays with you for the rest of your life and you're only 17. Thank god he discovered this early by taking a test and managed to keep it under control so that he could live on, but taking pills every day must be exhausting.

True but we need to get into why young gays prefer adult men instead of their own age group. There's just too much trauma associated with being a young gay, you're lucky to make to 30 alive.

He's brave, talented and good-looking. If he's single, I'd happily take him and do x(xx) rated things with him.

I don't disagree but do we know this to be the case here?

OT - Really pleased for him to feel able to share this.  The song's good too much better than Romance With a Memory. Will be checking out his album while i wait for Romy and XX4.
