Bros - out now (and unfortunately is not doing well, go see it -_- )

The marketing for this film has been incredibly self-aggrandizing and obnoxious for what I imagine is an innocuous and light-hearted watch in the same way Fire Island was. Celebrities would really be better served to not squeeze dry the single piece of intersectionality they have for something that's really not worth the weight.

Interesting to see that they only included "masculine" body types, and straight passing characters as the love interests and the types of models they chose for the hook up scenes.. :celestial2:

Effeminate dudes with an athletic body type will eventually get their shine. The time is slowly but surely approaching. Expecting society to be coaxed into purchasing tickets to watch a mega-queer film that you are referring to is too much to visually and auditorily ingest for now. Allow the minds of the movie-goers to evolve a bit and give it some time. For now, we have to ascertain box office success for Bros, so that doors can be opened; making the increase in quantity and opportunities of these types of projects to have a seamless yet efficiently prudent growth. Essentially, gradually convert homophobia to tolerance in order to garner money and effeminate cast members. Shoving it down people's throats will slow the process down tremendously. Turn those lemons into an ocean of lemonade and transform your enemies into frenemies. It can effectively be done.

Not to be a dumb *****, but can someone explain how y'all are saying it's a bomb? How do you know already?

A lot of people are saying the theaters were almost completely empty when they went to go see it. :katie:

We have to wait because if the budget of the movie is low, then what appears to be  "low" box office revenue isn't as low as you might think when we factor the climate of streaming services and the pandemic. Then there is the fact that unless it's a superhero and/or an action-packed genre, the likelihood of stellar box office success is just NOT that grand

Well at least it got an A cinemascore so the movies quality isn’t to blame.  Also I don’t know why y’all are saying Fire Island “won.” Is it because it didn’t get a theatrical release so it could not get hit with all the flop headlines because it’d definitely would’ve made about as much if not less than this. Did it even make any noise on Hulu?

Fire Island would have made maybe half, being generous :rip:

Has the marketing been that major though? I never really hear about it outside of here or twitter

You might not have seen it but for a 20-million rom com it did get a big push, particularly in big cities and among influencers. All of those "Go see Bros!!!" social media posts are paid and some of them carry a heavy price tag. I also got the trailer (also paid) most of the times I watched a big release over the past months.

The budget is 22 million + marketing. Smile, by comparison, cost 17 million and made 8.2 million to Bro's 1.8 million yesterday. Mind you, they didn't expect to be number one but the studio projected at least 8-10 over the weekend and that's not happening.

The trailer confused me. Which one is supposed to be straight?

Neither of them? The cast is all LGBTQ+.

Yes. I saw many tv ads and they were on every industry paper, even got some magazine covers.
But the name Judd Apatow alone shouldve carried this to past $10M imo.
Billie just did too much damage with his big mouth

The title confused me because weren’t ppl just saying it was the first gay romcom doing well? Hm

it is shocking because I literally see an ad for this movie any and everywhere.

I’m partial because I just want Billy on the Street forever so I want his acting career to tank :foxaylove3:

I need Grace to review this so someone can make an edit of all the times she says "LGBT characters" in the video :duca:

Billy Eichner is obnoxious and unlikable - the movie was always doomed.

The clips I've seen of Billy on the Street were never funny and he was god awful during his seasons on AHS. I don't know why anyone thought people would rally to pay money to watch Billy.

It did $1.8m opening day. That's pretty awful. Its reception is good though but with a low opening it still doesn't look good. Meh.

Yas, I loved that movie.

Ot: they should've released it on streaming service not cinema

I just saw this with my bf. Everyone else in the theater were straight couples in their 50s. I was expecting to at least see some other gays there

It was cute. 5 years ago I would of never imagined a movie like this playing in theaters. Hopefully, it will do better on streaming services and get some award nominations. A GG nomination seems to locked for best comedy/musical

I’m completely misunderstanding the premise of this then :skull:

3 "straight" looking men and two other straight couples were in my theater when I watched it with my husband, it was so cringy because of this. Movie was good but I hate how the depicted gay men being "loose", the cliché Grinder usage and gay club scene where everyone is making out with each other and everyone is ripped with their shirts off. Really left the straights thinking we gay people are exactly what they think we are, disgustingly horny men who are promiscuous and will **** anyone. This might be true for some in the community but for me, I've been in a committed relationship for over 12 years now and really would have liked the movie to portray us as normal individuals who actually have respect for ourselves. I'm not mad it tanked.

This is exactly what went wrong. The movie ad campaign didn’t focus on the premise or characters. It was just “watch this groundbreaking gay movie or youre homophobic”

WoW congrats on 12 years :clap3:

And you are right, the entertainment industry focuses too much on the Grindr Gays when that’s not even 5% of our community.

:ahh: :ahh:

Kind of unsurprised this is flopping hard. This movie looked so obnoxious, made literally for too into Twitter gays.

Oh, I see.

It's sad cause everyone posting about it on social media is praising it. (Except for conservatives who haven't watched it nnnn.) Maybe word of mouth will help it out and it will do better than opening day suggests.

Please it’s probably like 70% of gays that have a Grindr account

This! The approach they took to marketing it really turned me off from seeing it.

That is nowhere close to true and a major blanket statement, in their year end report for 2020 Grindr reported to have almost 13 million users that were consisted of not just gay but bi, trans & other queer people. As we know that is not at all near the potential global number of gay people in the world.
